    Hello,

This is the first time I have requested a driver, usually dont have to spend too long looking, unless its an audio file, which is what brings me to this post.

I am tasked with installing 98SE and rebuilding a "Everest report"

    *MOBO - Biostar M6TWC

    *MOBO ID - 01/27/2000-i810-47B27x-6A69MB09C-00

I believe i have the correct chipset drivers installed for the i810 chipset, the audio and video were the only issues remaining after the chipset drivers were installed. I have visited the manufacturer's website.

However the remaining issue is with according to "Everest report" a

*PCI Analogue Devices SoundMAX Intergrated Digital Audio

    The North Bridge is an

    *Intel whitney i810

The south Bridge which is where the audio should be mapped through is (if i remember geek school correctly)

    *Intel 82801AB

    Rest of Hardware is

    *Celeron 500MHz
    *HDD 4.3gb Seagate
    *256 SD RAM (2 x 128MB / PC133)

I have tried downloading several Soundmax drivers for this device (Win98 Win9X) the best I could get was audio from the start up / login music.

Audio via Windows Media Player using the Soundmax Audio. Playback of Cd/roms or online radio - no good.

I had a look in the Media player 9 options and ensured the soundmax was the device to map audio through for the Speakers.

I had a look in the device manager and the soundmax is listed as the audio device with no notifications on the icon.

I had a look at the control panel and multimedia properties and the Soundmax was there but still no audio through media player, I even reinstalled media player just to be sure.

Windows updates are all at the most current available for 98.

I have investigated the "Multimedia" icon in the control panel and verified that the Soundmax is the card to playback through and checked the rest of the settings in this area which appear to be fine.

There is an issue in the control panel where there is a Soundmax icon, this appears after installing the driver, for whatever reason it cannot be opened. Is there a possibility that the driver that downloads has a corruption of some sort or just doesnt install correctly, this driver is for the correct O.S.

Is there some sort of WDM driver or AC97 issue I have potentially overlooked or forgotten to install:confused

Any helpful advice pointing to correct drivers or a solution would be greatly appreciated. This is the last task on my last build of approx some 30 odd 98SE (good grief:p) units and its proving to be the hardest to sort so far, especially with the O.S being so obsolete.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully assist. :wave

The driver you need is actually the Aureal 8810, and can be downloaded from this link. You'll need to type the validation code in the box next to the "Download file" button. If you have trouble with that driver, try using this one. Good luck!

    Hey there,

Thanks once again dlb for your help in this.

Can you please advise me how you came to the conclusion that it was this driver.

Just want to know what I overlooked so I dont waste so much time in the future.

    Cheers :)

I did lots of Googling. I found no strong references to the M6TWC having a SoundMax audio chip, but several diffrerent sites listed the Aureal chip with the M6TWC motherboard. I found it strange that the BioStar web site(s) had had NO info on this mobo at all, and I mean nothing, like it didn't even exist. Very strange.

    Hey there,

Yes I too found it strange that there was little info from the biostar site...I almost thought it may have been a pirated board that you hear strange rumors about from time to time...

I have only seen one P.C that was badged incorrectly as an AMD XP1800 thorughbread core and was actualy a Duron 1300Mhz! with an sticker indicating ot was an XP1800 on the fan - just like it said on the reciept! The other bizare thing was the cpu was sort of soldered into the socket so couldnt be changed... ever.

Anyways thank you very much for all your help.:wave
