Default xp continuously restarts

I have a computer running XP and all of the sudden it started restarting over and over. At first I tried booting to safe mode and I was able to do that. Ran a CCleaner and no help. Then I made the mistake of running a repair reinstall, same thing happens, keeps restarting over and over, now when I try to go to safe mode I get a error saying "can not run set up in safe mode, will restart" well we know what that gets me.

What should I do next?

Thanks Crystal

The first thing you should do is to get a look at the error message presented by the BSOD (blue screen of death).
Start tapping the F8 key after you press the ON button, and continue tapping until you are presented with the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" screen. Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to select "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and press the Enter key. Your system will attempt to restart normally, but when it crashes, it will not re-start. Instead, you will see a BSOD with error message. Record the error message in full detail, and post in this thread.
---------------------------------

Your situation can be remedied: There is no need to re-install Windows

What was the last thing you installed or changed before this started happening?
And as AustrAlien says try getting the BSOD error number so we can help more

OffTopic: Found it funny that Tybalt said about reinstalling windows and Austr's sig says "There is no need to re-install windows. haha

Hello Crystal Dragon, If for some reason you are unable to access the windows advanced option menu, see if you can stay logged in long enought to manually disable automatic restart on system failures.

i.e. Right click on my computer -> select properties. Select the advanced tab. Under startup and recovery, select settings. Under system failure uncheck "Automatically Restart" click ok-> apply -> ok.

Thanks for responding. I went to the Windows Advanced Options Menu and it did not have that option. I looked in the bios and did not find it there ether. I am at a loss.

Like I said above: "if you can stay logged in long enough you can manually disable automatic restart on system failures.

i.e. Right click on my computer -> select properties. Select the advanced tab. Under startup and recovery, select settings. Under system failure uncheck "Automatically Restart" click ok-> apply -> ok."

Tried all of that and nothing changed. As I stated above I can not get into safe mode after I tried to do a repair reinstall, and the option to disable auto restart is not there.

Crystal Dragon

Please supply more info.

Details of your system, desktop/laptop, make, model, XP service pack number?

"What was the last thing you installed or changed before this started happening?" ... as asked by CQ .... in reference to the initial re-starting problem. Did you see any evidence of malware being involved?

List the options that you do see in the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" screen. Do you see the option "Last known good configuration ... ": If so, try that 10 times.

Details of installation and/or recovery CDs that you have available for this system and any other, including service pack number ? What disk exactly did you use when you attempted "running a repair reinstall"?
------------------

Try this method of using the Recovery Console to rename the boot.ini file ..

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...force_safemode

and hopefully this will allow you to continue with the"repair reinstall".

Good luck, and please let us know the result.
