Linksys Router setup

I had an IP address set up for computer 1. Then, it was removed by the IP administrator to allow a new one to be activated on my Dell Win XP. When I connected both computers w/ a LINKSYS firewall router, I never had anything go so smoothly & efficient after I configured the 2 PC's. However, I just noticed that I did not follow thru on step 3, which called for (configuring the router) since all worked so good. Not absolutely sure that I need to do this step or or not?

My linksys router has worked for the last 3 months w/o configuring it. Occasional problems w/IP assignments being changed on me, but all I do is rerun the network setup wizard and it works again.

Probably the slacker's way out, but what the hey! I'm retired!:D

    LINKSYS Configure

From another retired guy, thanks for the advice.
Guess I'll wait until it demands an action necessary to take.;)

Linksys is alright, if I could I'd get a Cisco... *drool* but I'm just kidding myself :/ I'd recommend just looking at the configuartion to get a feel what's going on and see if you need to modify anything.

When you bought the router, did someone have to come and set it up for you? Reason for asking, a router (not sure about Linksys) isn't all that simple to configure and I'd have thought whoever installed it would've done that already. If you're refering to "configuration" as in configuring the IP addresses, routing tables, and access control lists.

You need a console cable to connect to the router and configure it, right? Then use Hyper Terminal to connect on COM1 or COM2 whichever port on your computer you've plugged the console cable. You also need to set the stop bits, baud rate, and parity correctly... default doesn't work. I just think that if someone installed it, they'd have set that up.

Generally non-Cisco routers are easy to set-up by hitting their IP (ie. 192.168.0.1 192.168.1.1 or whatever gateway you have)... Ciscos' I have not worked too much with but are very complex beasts...

w/my LinkSys router I did the following:

Plugged the 4 computers into it (and the network setup that goes with it)
Plugged the WAN cable into the Motorola cable modem
Connected to my ISP and setup an account online
    Started surfing
    ...finis

USASMA...WHAT YOU DID IS EXACTLY MY EXPERINCE...NO TROUBLE AT ALL...STARTED SURFIN'. However, every thing points to a shared printer but I still can't get the other printer to print on the shared network. Any ideas?

Cisco routers are for industrial/professional use. Home "routers" (LinkSys, NetGear, D-Link) are basically combination NAT/DHCP servers. Some of them have true routing capability (RIP), but most don't.

As for the printer problem: Do you have NetBEUI (NetBIOS) installed on all machines? Is the Guest account disabled on any of your machines? Are you combining Windows XP with 9x or NT/2k? Do any XP computers have IFS (Internet Firewall) or another firewall running?

Or for geeks, I know alot of people have Ciscos' at their home...

Good Morning Da Chicken...Yes, I have NETBEUI protocol installed. Primary network logon shows "Windows logon" for my ethernet connection. Bindings tab indicate that my network componets communicate using "Client for Microsoft Networks" w/ a check mark in the box. Guest acct is not disabled. I am combining Windows XP w/ Win 98 2nd Edition. No other firewall but the one that came w/ Win XP Pro o/s & with the Linksys router.

can you view the other computers in Network Neighborhood? Can you view their printers?

also, buried somewhere in the network properties is the file and printer sharing for microsoft networks - that service/protocol has to be installed on the host machine in order for it to work. (Probably the same screen where you see Client for Microsoft Networks, TCP/IP, NetBEUI, etc displayed)

Other than that, I'm out of ideas. My usual file/component sharing consists of the shared documents folder (I run my wife's scanner on her system and save to shared documents....then I run to my computer and open it from her shared documents)

    Printer Sharing

Usasma...I can view my printer ok on the Dell & on the Gateway w/ the hand under to show that it's shared. You say the service/protocol has to be installed on the host machine in order for it to work. Which disk would have that info on it?

Go to network properties and find the page with the client, TCP/IP, NetBEUI, etc on it.

On my XP it's a right click on the local area connection and the page pops right up (I seem to remember it this way under 98SE also).

The box says: "The connection uses the following items" If File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks isn't listed then you'll have to add/install it. Click on Install, select Service, select File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks and click Add. It should run w/o a disk, but if it asks for one it's asking for your Win98 CD.

Since the sharing hand is showing, I suspect it's installed already. Trying going through the network to the printers and faxes folder (not the printer itself) on the remote computer, then right click, select properties, and run through the tabs until you find the "Print Test Page" button and try that. At the very least it should pop up a troubleshooter for you!

    Good Luck!

Primary logon needs to be with Client for Microsoft Networks. File and Printer Sharing from 98 to NT-based systems don't work, IIRC, under Windows Logon. The Client gives you the annoying logon dialog, but I think there's some way to disable that (automatic logon, somewhere).

You could also try disabling those firewalls.

Part of the problem is that Win 98SE (and ME/2k/NT) use NetBIOS to resolve network names, and WinXP (and 2003) use DNS (which is generally better). They don't really like talking to each other, though.

    Sharing Printers Problem

Appreciate all the suggestions/solutions. Workgroup names are identical in both computers. I put the Win 98 disk in to see if it would install the "add service" files for printer sharing & all I got was a msg stating " the files you are looking for are not on this disk". I'll have to revisit this problem later.

Dunno if this helps any, but my first network was between a XPPro(Beta) and Win98SE (It's how I found out that my wife was cheating on me). I went through the rigamarole w/ NetBEUI to make it work. Didn't know about firewalls back then, so that could be the problem. Didn't use the Client for Microsoft Windows either.

    I'm stumped! Sorry!

    Sharing Files

Well, so there other advantages to networking! Good you found out somehow! I already went thru the NETBEUI route change fm NETBIOS.

How did you find out with your network? Just curious.

Spying through open file shares, I don't really think this is an appropraite topic for the board :(

    Tater,
Was browsing through her junk to see what was slowing the system down. Found numerous files w/similar names in the Temp Internet Folders. Ran 'em through a text editor and found, among other things, "well, we'll just take him for what we can get before I leave him"
Got a lawyer right away, even got to testify about it in court )
