Computer freezes randomly.

Fixing a friend's computer. They took it to geek squad a while back for a freezing problem. I have been cleaning off all the bloatware and junk that it still had, when the freezing seems to have returned. It seems to especially happen while the internet is going. Sometimes after 1/2 hour, sometimes after many hours. Attaching what I believe is requested, hopefully I have followed the steps correctly! :)

No worries, I have been being patient! I understand the need for the system you have in place. (ok...so I've probably been checking every hour for the last couple of days!) I appreciate the update you have given and await your response and hopefully some directions!

Thank you in advance for any assistance that you may be able to provide.

The below fixes and advice are specific to this member's problem and should be used for issue(s) on this machine only.

Hello, Nebberz, please do not install any other software while we are still working with you unless instructed. Once we have given you the all clean and final instructions you will be free to install what you want.[/b][/color]

    * This is not where you were instructed to run MGTools.exe [C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\] --- Move it now directly under your C:\ Directory, or subsequent instructions may not work.

Question:Do you know what this folder is? C:\WINDOWS \yellowtail+1

    Step 1:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.
    Step 2:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 3:
Now we need to use ComboFix.

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      [IMG]
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 4:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 5:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 6:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the below logs to your next reply:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • C:\combofix.txt

Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure and give a description of how things are working now!

I hope you did not feel pressured to respond to me because of that other thread. :)

When I saw the direction *If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.

I started combofix by mistake to see if it would ask me that and let it run through. Not thinking straight it seems. :/

I added the text that you asked on a second run through and it seemed to work.

PC has not freezed as of yet, but I will update if I see anything. Thanks thus far!

oops, forgot to mention that the 2nd java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.0_01) I believe it was had an error while uninstalling and that it was terminating. It was no longer in the uninstall list after that though.

Inside the yellowtail+1 folder is scrub2k.exe and it's ini. A subsequent search on google revealed it to possibly be included with drivers for some HP Deskjet printers. I do believe the family mentioned that they owned an HP printer now.

*still no freezes as of yet! I'll leave it on overnight....lookin good so far though. Looks like I might be able to give it to them mostly fixed after all!

A reminder: Follow my instructions exactly or you risk damaging the machine during malware removal!

*Creating another thread, about your malware thread is also considered bumping - I'll ignore that, this one time.

I've received your new logs and will review them AFTER my work day.

Well, it has been a couple of weeks for these problems and they need their computer back. If you figure out what needs to be finished up I will try to get it back from them when ever they can spare it. I have informed them not to download anything or to install any programs for the time being.

Hopefully they don't mess anything up but the family runs a business and needs the computer to edit their menus. I didn't expect to have their computer for this long though and feel bad keeping it any longer!

    Thanks.

oh and i realize this is probably bumping the thread, but it has been long enough, what's a few more days. :p

I'm sorry that my thread in a completely different forum was still considered bumping (I did not see any rules concerning this in the do not bump your post - it only hurts you thread.) I should have gone to another website and asked in one of their forums if it was possible for another malware site helping to clean a computer to forget about a thread. Had I realized it would have made a difference, I would have done that instead. :)

    Hello, Nebberz!

My apologies for keeping you waiting...
    :-o

Your logs look good! If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double-click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks, I will go ahead and do this!

I might be misreading step 1 though.

"We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan."

So this says to keep them, but unless I purchase them they will not provide protection? It seems like they have already provided some protection? The resource usage is no problem. I'm just wondering if I am somehow misinterpreting the guide, or if there is a typo!

They will provide no real-time protection, if not purchased --- they would be "On Demand" scanners only.

ahh yes, that makes more sense. That should probably be edited in the guide if somebody gets a chance. :) No protection is a tad different than no real-time protection. :) But maybe that's just me that considers on demand scanning still being a form of protection. :)

Looks like I might be able to get the computer back tomorrow to finish this puppy up! Thanks again and happy holidays!
