Hi,

Brief Background on Issue:
Yesterday, (1/22/10) I was playing chess online on my Toshiba laptop (www.games.yahoo.com) when Windows Defender notified me about Trojan.Agent/Gen FakeSpy and asked if I wanted to quarantine or remove all, I selected remove all. It indicated that the "quarantine" was successful...?
This malware program installed a something called "Anti virus live," a phony virus scan program that installs a "Grey, stripped shield on the task bar.

IE will not access the web now, typical of an infection. I can browse with Firefox...although when I attempt to run on line virus scanners (where downloading and installing is required) the installation process won't complete and I get an error message. I know it's fighting the haircut I'm gonna give it with your help. Also, I read on a different thread that each Reboot moves the virus deeper into the system so is rebooting a good idea after every step, especially if the virus is still present?

What I'm Doing Now:
I read the "Please Read Me First" thread late last night and began the steps, downloading the tools and updates on a separate computer to an external usb drive and I connect it to my laptop to access the data.

Mistake:
I downloaded SuperAntispyware and ran the scan but I failed to update it first due to connectivity issues. It found and removed the following items:

Rouge.Agent/Gen (38 items)
Adware.Tracking Cookies (13 items)
Trojan.Agent/Gen-FakeSpy (2 items)

The "Anti virus live" activity has stopped. However, I reviewed the "Read Me First" instructions again, I found that I missed the "Uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types option" step.

I accessed the hidden files menu and unchecked that box this morning. I was finally able to download the "SuperAntiSpyware" definition file update using another computer.

Question: Can I install the SuperAntiSpyware update and scan the system again? It may find other extensions missed in the first scan and I'm sure the log from the first scan is still there.

I ran RootRepeal and it found 626 items but when the save file window pops up it indicates "Could not create file!"

This just happened, what should I do to get the log?

Welcome to Major Geeks!

As stated at the very beginning of the READ & RUN ME, you need to keep on working thru all of the instructions and attach the requested logs from things that work. You must not stop. Also you must only run scans once as stated in the instructions. If you have not already run ComboFix then please do not run it unless you have downloaded it just today ( 01-25-2010 ) since there was a bug in the previous version from about 01-23-2010.

Hello again.

1) Followed the "Read/Run First" as much as system allowed...posting text logs only for the scans that completed successfully.

2) Combofix: As advised in your last reply, I downloaded the updated version of Combofix and attempted to run it a second time. Got the blue screen for the second time, system crashed, then recovered. I decided not to try it again.

3) MG Tools: Ran the scan correctly but did not generate a .zip file. I searched the root folder in C: and could not locate it.

4) Internet Explorer is not functioning, however Firefox does with some limitations.

You were way out of date with your database versions for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes. To be safe you should run them again (one at a time) but before scanning, make sure you update them first. Attach new logs.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Hello again,

I have rescanned and attached the 3 respective logs. I contacted tech support for malwarebytes to ask how to manually obtain and install the latest definitions as you requested; I was given a link and the tech told me "it was not the latest definition, but it would get me started". There was no detection by either program after updating but the system may still infected.

Computer Behavior:

1) I can access the net via Firefox, but downloads do not complete. If I try to perform on-line scans or download anti-virus definitions, the system will not allow them to install and gives an error message with the following error code:

An error occurred. Please report the following error code to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware support team. 732 (12029, 0)


2) IE (Internet Explorer) cannot access the Internet.

3) Most other system files, programs and functions "SEEM" to be operating normally. I have not noticed any extremely unusual behaviors except for items 1 and 2.

You have a load of left overs from Symantec. Please run the below then reboot. After reboot run it one more time.

Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)

You also have left overs from McAfee! Run the below tool:

I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove eveything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and defintely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.



Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
  • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
  • Do not change any check box options!!
  • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

  • Now click the Execute button.
  • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
  • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
  • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
  • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Users\warlock7\AppData\Local\Temp

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

Then attach the below logs:
  • C:\avenger.txt
  • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Hello again,

1) Reorganized desktop.

2) System seems to be operating normally.

3) Completed reconfiguration of IE, Internet access via IE has been reestablished.

Questions:

a) Which tools do you recommend to remove all the tools used to complete the virus fix; (e.g. Ccleaner, MGtools, Malwarebytes, SuperAntispyware, etc.)? I will probably keep Malwarebytes and SuperA because I don't think the free versions interfere with programs that actively monitor malicious behavior, but I'd like your opinion on selecting the right tools to remove these programs in the near future.

b) If I continue using Ccleaner, how often should it be used considering I already have and regularly use Clean Up?

c) Is the "No Scripts" Firefox add-on effective or is it potentially dangerous?

Summary: System seems to be functioning regularly.

It is not dangerous but it is not going to protect you from malware. It all trys to block various malicious scripts from running within your browser. Your PC has no protection and you need protection which is also covered in the below.



If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
  1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
  2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
    • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
    • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
      • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
      • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
  3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
  4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
  5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
  6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
  7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
  8. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
  9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
