    Dear All,

I'm lost. Just found out that I do not have any sound when I visit websites with either Firefox or IE. Tested the computer (XP) with avi and mp3 files on VLC without any problems. Checked the youtube site, and I do not hear any sound from the video. Kindly help me solve this frustrating problem.

Loaded the new Java and also Adobe Flash player.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi All,

Still unable to get the sound from the internet e.g. youtube either with IE or Mozilla. However, I do not have a problem with the WinAmp player or VLC player. Reloaded the Creative Lab driver. Any experts? Thanks.

Open volume control and be sure it's not muted.

    Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0.190.4
    yours is 6.0.180.7

Shockwave Flash is up to date

    Shockwave for Director 11.5.6.606
    yours 11.0.3.472 needs updating

    Silverlight 3.0.40818.0
    yours 2 something needs updating

Java is one update behind. You are at 18 and it is now 19

All the MS DRM and Windows Media Player plugins are up to date.

I do not have any Quicktime nor Real Player plugins so I can't comment on those.

Do this: go to Tools/Addons the Plugins and Click on all the Real Player plugins and temporarily disable them. Shut down FF and the fire it up again and see if sound works on websites. My thinking is that maybe too many players are vying for control and that might be why you have no sound.
If that still doesn't allow you to hear anything, you can go back in and enable the Real Player plugins.

    Hi Plodr,

Updated Shockwave for Director and Silverlight. Disabled all the realtime plugins and there is still no sound. Should I disable more or delete all of them and reload fresh? Look forward to more advice.

No, don't disable nor delete any more addons or plugins.
Let me do some more searching to see other reasons why no browsers produce sound.

Searching for old threads here where XP users also had no sound in IE and FF

This fix was posted and worked for a few people
I found the same solution at another site also.

    Hi Plodr,

Went to the location but could not enter the string. The error message tells me that the string exist and cannot be modified. Can't see this string on the "regedit". What should I do? Maybe I'm not doing it right.

On my XP Home, I right-clicked when I got to Drivers32 and selected New then String Value.

As I understand when you click on Drivers32 and look through all the entires in the right pane, you do not see wavemapper listed at the bottom?

WOW, you are missing everything in Drivers32! I have about 35 entries after the default!

I'll have to search to see how you can either inport that registry key from a working computer or repair.

I'm not sure if this repairs the registry, it repairs missing windows files
    Code:
     SFC /scannow
What version of XP (home or pro?) and what Service Pack are you running?

No. I found this which sounds like your problem.
So Right click on the Driver32 and select Permissions.
    Next I found this.

    Hi Plodr,

SOLVED! No problems. I can hear the start up of the XP and the youtube sound works. Changed the permissions to grant access to all users in the Drivers32 folder and the drivers etc appeared. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP.

Re: No Sound IE - need more instruction

You said: Solved the problem with not having any event sounds in Windows XP and thinking that the Registry entry under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32] was empty.

I want to try this, but alas, although geeky, I'm a novice computer geek.
(Altho I did do your instructions for getting rid of that "2010" virus. Thank you.)

How do I get to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32] in order to change the permissions in the registry?

Will you please go relatively step by step?

    Thank you.

    Hi Goldfish1

Im taking it you are also using Windows XP? click start > run then type regedit and hit enter or click ok, then once regedit is open click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and then keep clicking the relevent + next to the names in the path you are trying to follow and the next one after HKEY will be Software and so on until you get to drivers32

But before you edit anything right click drivers32 and choose export and save a copy incase it doesn't work or a wrong entry is typed.

I would however also run the Read Me guide to removing malware from our Malware forum area as you may still have malware on your system causing problems

    Hail patient geeks:

I want to do this: Go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32 and add new string value named wavemapper with value msacm32.drv.

Can someone take me step by step on how to fix my no sound problem now?

I got to the registry editor and drivers32 but it won't let me make a copy - says selected branch does not exist.

Then I go to Modify - says Cannot Edit: Error reading the value's contents
Name AB(default) Reg SZ Value not set

    Thank you.
