Default No longer able to mount files

I'm not sure if it is a mount issue or an Applications privilege issue, but for months I have been unable to mount DMG files.

Example: Back in '07 I dl Firefox, opened, installed. It is now an "unsupported" and I need to upgrade it, however every time I try to open it (or any other dmg file) I have problems. FF won't open at all. And for the rare ones that do, when I try to put it in the applications folder I get denied.

I have admin rights, have recreated 3 different admin accounts and still nothing.

Mac version 10.2.8

Thanks in advance...

I have couple of suggestions/questions:

1. When you right click (control click) the DMG files, what is listed under "open with" as default.
2. Have you tried opening the DMG file directly from "Disk Utility" located in your Utilities folder inside the application folder?
3. Have you tried fixing permissions on your HD?
4. If you ever get lucky and get the DMG file to mount, remove the original FireFox to the trash and then move the new one in its place. If this does not work, what happens of you drag the new FF to the desktop?

Yes, but it won't let me.

Yes I did that about a month ago. But now it won't even let me (see below)

Haven't gotten lucky yet.

Weird to note - sometimes it asks me for my Admin password, and when I put it in, it reject is. I can log on with it, but if I try to use the Disk Utility and unlock it, it won't let me in. ???
