Acquiring address

xp home (pre service pack, whistler private)

i installed sp2 after seeing a sp was never installed,

the network sits and acquires and never resolves an ip address.
i go to do a repair and the last three parts of the repair fails in error.
i have done an ipconfig /release and it was good then went to the ipconfig /renew and failed

I have tried:
Workaround:

Start,
Run,
cmd
netsh int ip interface reset resetlog.txt <-- both netsh were rewritten
(netsh interface ip reset resetlog.txt)
netsh int ip set address DHCP
(netsh interface set name="local connection 3" source=dhcp)
exit
Reboot
and try again..

Though #2:

Under TCP/IP Properties,
set a static IP for a little while,
and then revert to DHCP.
I do not know what network segment you are using,
for most small routers:
IP: 192.168.1.253
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Set a default DNS server to the
router IP, usually: 192.168.1.1

both attepts failed and the acquiring continues

What Brand and Model router are you using? I may be able to help you get on the right subnet with a static IP.

DHCP wasn't started. I went into Services and found it was set to manual and stopped. I changed the settings to automatic and start. I can get online now.
