Jailbreaking your iPhone is now legal, according to a recent ruling by Library of Congress. Note that it will still void your warranty.

    Details here and here.

Just a quick query here and does this mean that its legal in the USA or Worldwide? not too up on the law in this respect as Apple I know takes out various copyrights and patients in different countries so "may" not cover all.

Not that being legal or illegal stopped many jailbreaking the phone anyways.

So that means what exactly? Can iphones be used with other carriers?

The Library of Congress ruling has legal power only in the US.

Technically, they always could if you hacked them. Now hacking them for that purpose is legal if you live in one of the United States of America. As long as you don't mind no longer having a warranty, that is. :)

This is from one of the articles:

"iPhone jailbreaking is now covered under “fair use,” DRM circumvention is now allowable in certain situations, and e-books are now allowed to be read aloud by computers. "

It just mentions DRM, not allowing it to be used with other carriers. Does that fall under the same category?

The DRM Circumvention they are talking about is for PC games. Sadly, making a back-up copy is not one of the situatons that makes it legal. :(

What they mean with "jailbreaking is now covered under 'fair use' " is that it is no longer legal to force you to use a certain carrier wit the iPhone. You are allowed to hack it so it can be used with another carrier, if that's what you want to do.

In other words, you are no longer legally locked to AT&T if you buy an iPhone. :)
