What's the best video player out there?

I've got all different kinds of video players on this PC, but none of them have what I need.

I'm looking for something that will support Dolby Digital 6.1 playback of DVDs, and supporting ATI Radeon hardware acceleration would be a plus. Something that I can download, preferably free, but shareware will do too ;).

I see Windows Media Player 9 has DVD options for 6 speaker surround, but they are disabled, and it says I need a Dolby Digital decoder to enable it..

you can pay for a plugin for Windows Media 9 that would decode dolby. open windows media navigate to tools -> Plugins -> download plugins. The plugins are listed there. It will take you to a web site.

I'm not really looking to spend any money on this, I already spent my cash on the hardware. [IMG]

And; "This version of Zoom Player is a Limited beta. It only includes media playback capabilities, the DVD support is not included. "

Neither of those are really what I'm looking for... I'm downloading DirrectDVD 5.0 right now. Hopefully it will satasify my needs.

My opinion? Have you tried DivX? I'm sure you've already considered this, as it's quite popular, but if you haven't, I highly suggest giving it a shot. There are downloadable codecs for it to accomadate your needs. Do a search on google for it and you'll come up with plenty of links.

You won't need to pay for a plugin. Get the Nimo Codec pack. It has the latest audio and video plugins and it's free. I have had some intermittent problems with it. If your player doesn't work properly after installing the codec you may need to reinstall the codec pack, or your player. It's free so I keep the bitchin to a minimum.

I got the nimo codec pack, but WMP is still locked in 2 speaker mode.. and DivX is only playing 2 channels as well. :(

What kind of motherboard do you have? Does it have onboad sound like most of the nForce2 boards, or do you have a sound card. It's beginning to sound like a setting to me.

It's an Asus P4P800 Deluxe. It has onboard sound, but I don't use it.. I'm using a Sound Blaster Audigy 2.

All 7 speakers play fine, but it's not actual surround sound, it's just taking a 2 channel feed and upmixing it to play on all channels. When I play a DVD and it's got sound coming from the rear right I don't want it to play on the front right too, which is what it's doing now.

Everything's hooked up right, and it does multi-speaker surround just fine in games and audio demos. It's just that I don't have a software DVD player that will decode Dolby Digital 6.1. Hell, I'd even settle for 5.1 at this point.

Now DVDs won't play at all.. I had installed the nimo codec pack acording to the guide, but apparently there were still errors in it. So now I have uninstalled nimo and I have no DVD decoder at all. :(

I don't really have time to spend fixing it right now, I've got to study for a claculus test. So I guess tomarrow I guess I'll get back to trying to figure this damn thing out... I don't think the nimo pack had a Dolby Digital decoder in it anyway.

BTW, when installing the nimo codec pack it says it cannot read the file "msvcr70.dll" in system32. The file is there and everything, so I don't know what it's problem is..

    along these lines

has anyone else noticed that SP1 completely ruins (among others) Nimo codec pack?

before i installed SP1 (i was reluctant to when it first came out because of all the compatibility problems it brought) using nimo codec pack, i NEVER had problems playing any kind of file.

since SP1, there are tons of files that refuse to play.
I can get sound output in tons of players with the green 'slime' over the video, and VIDOMI player plays the files in perfect quality with NO sound :(

not even powerDVD (the version that came with my video card and another OEM version that came with my DVD drive play all divx files anymore.

the XVID codec fails to have any effect anymore either... is there a way to get around this?

@Main Frame windows media isnt playing your videos in 6.1 with your audigy 2? i have the Audigy Platinum EX and it never fails to play them in 5.1, without a plugin or anything... you sure 6.1 is enabled in the creative sound mixer? (may sound dumb, but just checking)

Multi-channel playback is disabled in Windows Media Player 9, I'm not sure why.

Update- I have never found any free DVD player that will actually work with 6.1 channel Dolby Digital. What's the deal?
