Please download MBRCheck to your desktop
  • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
  • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
  • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
  • Press Control+C
  • Open a notepad and press Control+V
  • now please ATTACH that report to this thread

Also I need to ask some questions:
  1. Do you have any drives that has a non-windows installation on them
  2. Are all drives NTFS formatted
  3. Do you have any non-standard or special MBRs which can occur from companies like Dell or HP who frequently install additional partitions used for recovery partitions in lieu of giving CD/DVDs.
  4. Is any program like Grub ( see:http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/ ) being used
  5. Is drive-encryption being used?
  6. Are any drives external USB pen drives or external hard drives being used?
  7. VERY IMPORTANT: Do you have all important data backed up? You really should do this before continuing since we will need to rewrite your MBR to fix this and while most times this can be done without any problem, these infections can react badly and that could result in a PC not being bootable. You really don't have much choice though since these infections are too dangerous to your security to leave on a PC.

You need to do this before continuing. You can use a CD or DVD burner or a USB flashdrive or similar to copy your files to.

You should also run MGtools per the below instructions and attach the MGlogs.zip file which will provide Kestrel13! with answers to the other questions asked.

Sorry! I forgot to give you the instructions link. Here it is:

Using MGtools

Let us know when you have your pictures and everything else you need backed up. Most of the time there is no problem, but the infection you have requires the MBR to be written. And some PCs have non-standard MBRs which could result in a PC becoming unbootable.

Now if you wish to continue and fix the malware - please do the following:
  • Run MBRCheck.exe
  • Wait until you see the following lines:
    • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Options:
[1] Dump the MBR of a physical disk to file.
[2] Restore the MBR of a physical disk with a standard boot code.
      [3] Exit.
      Enter your choice:
  • Please push the 'Y' key and then press Enter
  • When the program asks you to Enter your choice: enter 2 to Rstore the MBR and press the Enter key
  • Now the program will ask you to "Enter the physical disk number to fix (0-99, -1 to cancel):"
    • Enter 0 and press the Enter key.
  • The program will show Available MBR codes as below
Quote:
Enter the physical disk number to fix (0-99, -1 to cancel): 1
Available MBR codes:
[ 0] Default (Windows XP)
[ 1] Windows XP
[ 2] Windows Server 2003
[ 3] Windows Vista
[ 4] Windows 2008
[ 5] Windows 7
[-1] Cancel

Please select the MBR code to write to this drive:
  • You need to select your version of Windows frrom the list. For example, enter 0 or 1 for XP or enter 3 for Vista.....etc. and then press Enter.
  • The program will prompt for confirmation. Type 'YES' and hit Enter.
  • Left click on the title bar (where program name and path is written). From menu chose Edit -> Select All
  • You will see all the text in the window get highlighted.
  • Hit the Enter key on your keyboard to copy all of the text into the clipboard.
  • Paste that text into Notepad, save it to your desktop as MBRfix.txt
  • Restart your PC.
  • Attach the MBRfix.txt file to your next message..

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Then attach the below logs:
  • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode

Please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following software:
  • Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Did you set this yourself?

Quote:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Provied By Kemoy
Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
Quote:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ffcbaceecbfaccfb - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ffcbaceecbfaccfb.dll
After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Please go to Jotti's malware scan

(If more than one file needs scanned they must be done separately and logs posted for each one)
  • Copy the file path in the below Code box:
    Code:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\IPSEC.SYS
  • At the upload site, click the browse button.
  • Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the file(s) we need scanned and click "submit file"
  • Your file will possibly be entered into a queue which normally takes less than a minute to clear.
  • This will perform a scan across multiple different virus scanning engines.
  • Important: Wait for all of the scanning engines to complete.
  • Once the scan is finished, Copy and then Paste the link in the address bar into your next reply.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
  • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
  • Do not change any check box options!!
  • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
Quote:
Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kzzzownq.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\lfbjzffx.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\xbgjjjgc.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\zkhbnght.sy

Registry keys to delete:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}

Registry values to replace with dummy:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows | AppInit_DLLs
  • Now click the Execute button.
  • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
  • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
  • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
  • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Also delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

Quote:
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
C:\Documents and Settings\DUNCAN\Local Settings\Temp
At this point I would like for you to run combofix as per the R&R.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Tell us how things are running.

My apologies.

See this:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

Slight change of plan, in the order of how to proceed. After you have digested the R&R, I would like for you to then run:
  • SUPERantispyware
  • Malware Bytes
  • Combofix
  • Then run MBRCheck.exe again.
Include the logs each of them create, attach them into your next response.

The MBR infection appears to be gone. However I see some other items that need to be taken care of or looked at.

Follow through this:

Proxy Server - Changing Settings

Now we need to use ComboFix
  • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
  • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
  • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
  • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
Code:
KILLALL::

File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\zkhbnght.sys

DirLook::
C:\d567baeb0d128e22049f9cf095e2
  • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
  • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
  • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
  • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

  • Follow the prompts.
  • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
  • I will ask for this log below

Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Next...please go to Jotti's malware scan

(If more than one file needs scanned they must be done separately and logs posted for each one)
  • Copy the file path in the below Code box:
    Code:
    c:\windows\system32\d5b6d93c5f82a426b6169c819cb391d8.sys
  • At the upload site, click the browse button.
  • Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the file(s) we need scanned and click "submit file"
  • Your file will possibly be entered into a queue which normally takes less than a minute to clear.
  • This will perform a scan across multiple different virus scanning engines.
  • Important: Wait for all of the scanning engines to complete.
  • Once the scan is finished, Copy and then Paste the link in the address bar into your next reply.

Then do the same for the below files and also let me know the results:

Code:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\pfex.sys
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also include the Jotti results.

IMPORTANT: You need to give me a brief description regarding how the machine is running now, please.
