I use GAIM. I used to use Trillian, but I don't use IM enough to justify Trillian Pro. And Cerulean wasn't updating free Trillian enough (read: not at all) to keep up with random protocol changes and so forth.

Trillian is about as refined as ICQ and MSN. The only think I liked about Trillian Pro is the history (GAIM has a plug-in for that) and metacontacts (combining several contacts in to one because they're actually the same person).

GAIM is a bit less easy to use. It's meant for Linux, not Windows, so WinGAIM also tends to be a bit flaky (AFAIK, this is a WinGTK+ problem -- not WinGAIM's fault).

I would NOT buy Trillian Pro right now. It isn't clear what's going to happen when MSN and Yahoo finish doing their thing in a few months.

GAIM's memory footprint on my system (1GB RAM ) is 12MB(!).

Don't remeber Trillian, but IIRC it wasn't very slim either.
