Default Media State Disconnected

Hi! I have an HP laptop with Windows XP on it. I was normally able to use Wireless networks on my laptop all through. But, suddenly, for the last 1 month, I can't connect to a wireless network anymore. I am getting the error that says - Media State Disconnected / No operation con be performed on Wireless Netwrk Connection wile it has its media disconnected.

The internet connection shows connected in my taskbar but I am guessing that there's a problem with a two-way transfer of data. I can not open any websites or use any online applications.

I have tried everything from pinging the connection to restoring my system to an earlier date. I have done ipconfig/renew. All that to no avail. Here's what I get with ipconfig/all

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

Please tell me what can I do? How can I resolve the problem? Please reply soon. Thanks a ton in advance.

open your device manager, does it show any ! or ? for any devices?

stupid question, but there's probably a switch or a button to turn off the wireless antenna, is it turned on? I'm not sure on an HP, but could be one of the function keys.

Hi

Have you had malware on your PC reciently?

One thing to check is that in Services (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services) that the Wireless Zero Configuration is set to Started and "startup type" is Automatic, then try your WiFi again.

Do you use the inbuilt Windows Wifi manager or have you got installed the Intel/HP Wifi manager? personally I unsinstall any Wifi manager from a 3rd party and just use the inbuilt Windows one, less likely for conflicts.

Also an outside chance and especially if you have had malware is to run the WinSockFix HERE

Thanks!

Device manager doesn't show a ! or ? for anything.

I am not using a 3rd party connection manager, only the in-built windows Wifi manager. Haven't had malware recently and have checked other things you suggested. It's not working for me Don't know what to do now. Please help.

Hi

May need to try the steps HERE and then re-install the Wireless drivers from HP for your PC model, reboot and try again.
