OK, on Thursday I got infected with the Win32/Patched.FM and Win32/Patched.FL virus which has affected winlogon.exe and explorer.exe (kind of important files).
The AVG resident shield picked it up but was unable to do anything about it and it was popping up all kinds of rubbish messages and websites. I had to hard power off my machine initially and went into safe mode to try and get past the initial problems via my AVG free 9.0 safe mode scan, then used my other computer to get onto this forum and check out the process to take in tackling it. The result is that I set it up for normal boot mode, and went through the full process as described for my computer (Windows XP Professional 32-bit). The only bit that appeared to fail entirely was the Root Repeal which didn't load even though I did disable virus checker and firewall beforehand. Logs are attached. The problem seems to be 'contained' now but I'm still infected through winlogon.exe and explorer.exe and now I've enabled the AVG resident shield again after the diagnostics it's flagging those two files every few seconds. Any help on sorting it out gratefully received. Thanks. |

Download and save this XPsp3bu.exe to your C:\ root folder. You must do this properly. Now run the XPsp2bu.exe program by double clicking on it. You may or may not notice a quick flash of a black window. This is normal. The program runs quickly and just extracts some files we need.
Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished): Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now: Quote:
* Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it! If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work. * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly. * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update. * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ): Code:
KILLALL:: File:: c:\windows\Mxucubovisi.bin c:\windows\Nyokahuku.dat Folder:: c:\documents and settings\Jonathan Seal\Local Settings\Application Data\jwogymkww FCopy:: C:\MGtools\temp\explorer.exemg | c:\windows\explorer.exe * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing! * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop. If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES. * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe * Follow the prompts. * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt * I will ask for this log below Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). Then attach the below logs: * C:\ComboFix.txt * C:\MGlogs.zip Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

OK, seems positive. Went through the process you described. Initially crashed out with a blue screen message stating it couldn't find a component (had left the room so not sure when this happened). Went back through the process with the firewall disabled and this time it went through fine so I have that log. The MG tools bit also worked fine. Can't see any evidence of the virus at the moment but please do have a look and tell me what you think.
Very much appreciated. J |

It looks like that took care of it. Give it a couple of days to be sure.
Use windows explorer to find and delete: c:\documents and settings\Jonathan Seal\Application Data\Erhazy c:\documents and settings\Jonathan Seal\Application Data\Roals If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
