I get a lot of pop ups on my computer, so I decided to try Ad-aware to make it stop. I ran it and it quarantined 69 files. When I open internet explorer, I still get tons of popups- porn, diet sites, programs to get rid of spam, etc. What can I do to make this stop?
Any ideas? Please let me know.

    Thanks in advance

    Becky

Are the popups browser windows or are they the grey windows with messages? You also might want a popup blocker, a quickie way to do this for free is to use the Google Toolbar http://toolbar.google.com

It works fairly well, but not the best, just an easy one to do. You could use a 3rd party interface to IE, I suggest Avant Browser or MYIE2, they all use the Internet Explorer engine, but block popups, tabbed browsing and more. Look in our browser section for those if interested. Dont pay for a popup blocker, I think its nutty for someone to take money away from some honest people and charge for it, when it can be done for free.

    Thanks

I just did spybot, and they STILL came up! It did find quite a few, and I used Ad-aware last night. I'm trying to find a pop up blocker now. Thanks again :)

I've read this whole thread and all are good things to do. I had something like this and I did all of the above without relief. I finally ran Hijack This .

It gives you a snapshot of everything going on. Cut and paste the log here and we'll rip it apart. :D There's a process running in there to call all those adds up.

    Good luck

Edit, I just reread Becky's first post and it could also be a browser hijack. in any case, the advice remains, it'll find it.

    here is a website

For every body out there who is having problems with the messenger in xp You might want to go to the following link and download this program that does it for you. this website also has many programs that will make your system more secure. I find it to be very usefull to test my firewall and ports.

    Spyware, adware and nowhere...

Unfortunately I became familiar with spyware/adware programs in assisting a client site. All of the above is sound advice and I have used most of them.

I use Spybot exclusively though many users have said the Spybot/Adware combo is good. None do very well if the detection rules/databases aren't kept updated, just like an anti-virus.

A question for Becky to consider. You haven't been partaking of the plethora of "free" P2P file exchange packages like Kazaa have you? If so uninstall them and get a "clean" shareware version or, in Kazaa's kase (sic) there are "cleaning" utilities. Most do not like being uninstalled.

Read the EULA's on "free"ware carefully (REALLY!). If it has statements like "by agreeing to this license the user entitles the provider to update the software on their system at anytime without prior notification....." or "information gathered will be used in confidence by the vendor and the vendor's associates for the purpose of ..." forget it!!!!!!

Personally I have grown to hate "free" spyware/adware programs. Users spend 10 minutes corrupting their system, come crying to me because uninstall did not stop the problem(s) and I spend hours getting the crap off their system.

And then they download another one! I finally (fourth time!) told one person to clean it up himself or live with it. I finally cleaned it up after his supervisor asked me to. Haven't heard from him since.

Also, if you did install things like Kazaa media desktop (heaven forbid!!) you might have a strange program running in the background that you can detect in Add/remove programs. Happened to me once when one of our computers were getting all kinds of nasty pop ups. I found an unrecognized program installed and after uninstalling it, the problem was gone. I know it sounds too easy to be true. But I am always overlooking the easy stuff first.
