Default Nyrate-L Trojan

Hi there,

I've been going through a process of trying to remove a file Sophos found called Troj/Nyrate-L. Whenever I tried to "clean up and remove" the file, Sophos would fail for some unknown reason. What's weirder is that it said the file was in the destination E:/ucure/ucure32.exe. The E drive is typically the SD Memory Card drive, yet there wasn't anything in the E drive (leading me to suspect the virus was hiding somewhere, thus why Sophos couldn't locate it).

A friend of mine directed me here, so I went through both the prepping and the cleaning--turning Sophos off of course. Interestingly, they found nothing so far as I could see. I've attached the logs below. If I've forgotten one let me know, and I'll add it. Thinking perhaps, somehow, one of the programs this website had me use had somehow gotten rid of it, or that maybe it had been some sort of error, I reran Sophos which found it again only this time in a different place. It now resides in:

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{64B6A53-B1CE-A5888-35F9DCF8E614}\RP292\A0077726.exe

Thinking that was certainly shady but still really wanting to get rid of this thing, I tried to remove it again. It said it was incomplete and to manually remove it, but I'm worried that--because of its location--it might be a white-listed file or something I shouldn't touch. Any help on the matter you guys can give would be greatly appreciated.

PS Sorry for the length. Wanted to be as descriptive as possible in regards to whats happened. Not sure how the trojan got on board either as its my girlfriend's computer, but we're suspicious it might've been a USB someone else put into the laptop when it was being used for presentations. Thanks again.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Your logs could be indicating an MBR infection. Are you running any kind of disk emulation software like Alcohol or Daemon Tools?

Let's cleanup your Restore points to resolve what Sophos is findingNow download TDSSKiller from Kaspersky to your directly onto your Desktop
  • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor. )
  • Allow the application to run if prompted by Windows or any security programs you have installed
  • It will start the scan and run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
  • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
  • Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )
  • Now if TDSSkiller did not reboot your PC, reboot it yourself. If already rebooted, just continue on.
  • Now Enable System Restore using the same link as above

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Then attach the below logs:
  • the log from TDSSkiller
  • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Hey, thanks for the reply!

As far as I'm aware, there are not any software emulation programs on here nor has she used any. I ran the scans and what not and while nothing popped up, after double checking with Sophos, the Nyrate trojan is no longer popping up. So if it's gone, thanks! If not, and there's something funky happening in the logs, let me know.

Thanks again!

No your logs are clean. I misread something before and thought there could be an MBR infection. There was none.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
  1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
  2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
    • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
    • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
      • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
      • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
  3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
  4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
  5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
  6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
  7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
  8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
  9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
