    ok heres the deal:

2800+ processor, not o/c using PIB heatsink should NOT EVER reach these temps, what the heck is wrong? average temp: 56/57C

    ~@ 3200+ = 63C!!!

    what the hell!

im wanting to get a heatsink but my dad isnt really happy bout the whole sending it to be installed process: so im gonna do it without him noticing! (hes not very bright)

anyone got like a photo guide to installing cuz i really dont want to have to be seeing cracked dye in my sleep!

(ps was going for cooler master jet 7 or thermaltake volcano 11 wahts better?)

I have never broken a CPU, and I am very careful to protect the MB with a piece of heavy acetate and make sure I have the correct tools. Most problems occur when you "make do" with a screwdriver that is too short or too wide.

You are looking in the right place for heatsinks, both are good.

Cheers! but oh crap now im all flustered and insecure about the whole thermal tape thing cuz thats what i got! any articles on actually removing a heatsink (times like this made me wish i had the rugged athlon64's!)

DUDE 56 C is normal for 2800 XP and down to a 2200XP

I got a Coolmaster 7 Aero + and it is loud and still 56C

the answer is your cpu will burn out at 85C you want to aim for low 50's the temps you are getting are real

If you do want to reseat the cpu, get a terminal screwdriver and a nappy wipe sort of towel( ie clean it good )and clean all the gunk off (allow to dry) but it wont make much difference.

When you reapply the new stuff make sure its even, if you use coolmaster it gives you a plastic template to level out the compound. otherwise its a bit hit and miss.

I have always used a screwdriver to reseat the heatsink -damn scary moments but as long as you are carefull it aint no big deal.

What you have to remember is that a complete rebuild to the guys on here is not a major expense. If you are worried let your dad take the responsability or show him this site , most of us have learnt by mistakes/experience and offer this advice for free
The alternative is to watercool - again seems scary but its the way to go

BTW my 2800 is running at 53C not a problem

my 2800+ runs at 43-35 idle and 51-53 on load. 56C is not the norm and it is a tad high. I have a volcano 7+ with the 3 speed switch. the temps I mentioned above are with the highest speed on. + ~2.5* on medium and again for low.

You take a stock case, stock heatsink, stock fan setup and you would be delighted with 56C

Im not sure what your setup is kodo but the only systems I have read about that have temps as low as yours are heavily modified or you live in a fridge.

If you advise people to get the temps down to 35-43C then at least give them some ideas how to do it!!

  7. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

I have 1 case fan on that side of my case. (it's a cube case so it's separated by the mobo back pane.)
I have a volcano 7+ instead of the stock HSF. No heavy modification here. If I put my HSF on low, then I get nearly the same temps. I put some arctic silver on there which dropped my temps a few degrees. I'm really not into modding at all. I typically go with stock stuff, but I decided that the bartons ran a litle too hot for my taste and decided to stick the Volcano on there. Especially with the video card (9800pro) sitting right below it.
It can be done cheaply. For 30 bux you can have a cooler system. Though the only draw back on the volcano 7 is the loudness of the fan. It's not bad on low, quite tolerable on medium and annoying on high @6000+ rpms.

You are running a similar spec to mine but the only way i had the CPU temp in the 40's was with the butterfly door fully open on the table with all the doors/windows open and the ceiling fan on.

Im really ready to watercool but if my coolmaster isnt doing the job im tempted by the volcano.

Will get one and report back

don't forget that I also used arctic silver for thermal paste. That really helped quite a bit as well.

    i've got a stock hs/f and 1 case fan and i run low-mid 40's w/o load. oh yeah...2200+.

i've never hit 56C...so i would have to say its not normal.

    coolness

my neighbor just bought a HP with a xp2800 in it. Hers is running at about 50-56C. I told her to give me 20 bucks and i'd get her a real nice fan and heatsink and install them for her... she declined because she has that whole nervous feeling about opening up the case. Which is consistent with her behavior before this computer. Her old computer ran a pentium 3. It started freezing up in bios and in windows (if it made it there). I figured the problem was heat and offered to give a try at fixing it. She declined because she was nervous about opening the case. She was frusterated with the freeze ups so she bought a new computer... then she gave the 800mhz pentium 3 to me. I took it in my apt and took it apart... the stock heatsink was about as big as a chipset heatink and it had a fan that blew air on it from about 5 inches away. Thats ridiculous. I put a giant heatsink on it and a nice fan DIRECTly on the heatsink and now it runs perfect. I'm posting on that machine and its running freebsd 5.1

My main computer is running an athlon xp 2400. I live in a cold area in MA... but between the fan i have on the case, the arctic silver keeping the heat flowing off the processor to the heatsink and the 6000 rpm fan, its running at around 30C on a cold day. I have all my windows closed and the heat on.. it just gets really cold in here sometimes. on a warmer day it runs about 35C. Well anyways just thought that I'd add that and say that all computers that they sell are not really fitted by companies like dell and HP with proper cooling solutions. They don't care if your processor burns out 2 days after the warrenty... infact i think they use statistical information to only applly the neccessary cooling to get it through the warrenty period. But a real cooling solution can make the chips last a long long long long healthy live.

I'm not saying to start ripping computers apart. It really is a delicate process and I don't think people should be doing it unless they are prepared to voilate a warrenty or break something by accident unknowingly.

But I can't stand people who are nervous about letting me tear apart thier machines... you never learn anything that way and in the long run the knowledge you gain will save you loads of money.. and people might start giving you broken computers and then u fix them. I got a free 400mhz E-machine, a free 266mhz laptop thinkpad, a free 800mhz hp.. all because people think they are broken.

    I watercooled :D

    So easy to do

Only thing is you are forever worrying that it is spraying water onto your mb gpu hd's etc etc

Not that much quieter but temps a lot lower all round.

Hello! I have a 2500 burton OC to 3200+ and have a volcano 11+.My temps are 39cel. and 41cel.I have alot of case fans. When you get the volcano 11 you get a nice reobus mounted on a aluminum plate that goes in a cd bay slot and a reobus that goes in a slot on your case were a pci would go out the back.Your choise of mounting then use the other for a case fan I did.I would get the volcano 11 its real nice.

since we're doing the whole temps thing:

    AthlonXP 2000+ @1,914Ghz on a ThermalRight SLK900U heatsink w/ 80mm Papst fan: 36*C full load.
Also have 2 120mm fans in the side panel.

how is the wireing in your case, move it all out of the way. With proper case ventilation the Stock heatsink should work fine, AMD designed it that way.

If you are going to replace the heatsink then the easiest way to remove the pink thermal tape from the core is a pencil eraser.

Sounds to me like you have a really good deal here! I'd keep friends with her, that's for sure! :D

Seriously, though, if you show her what you did to that box, and that it's running great, maybe she'll overcome her fears, take the plunge, and learn a few things in the process. We have a friend that is the same way. She's all afraid of letting us install Ad-Aware on her laptop...she doesn't even know what spyware is or does. She just says in a sarcastic tone, "We don't have spyware!" What can you do?

quite right eric, I just give up on trying to explain things to those people. They can find out when windows needs reinstalled.

What post did that quote from me come from?I don't remember that onme.

:D LOL! I can't even remember, but I thought it was a hoot, so I stole it!! I think you said that in a thread in the Lounge. I had even forgotten it was there! (I hardly read my own stuff, ya know!)

I used a huge coolermaster heatsink on my old P3 800. Didn't even need the fan and I stayed below 100 F.

Excuse the newbie here, but what is the safe temp for a cpu? I have just installed my new Athlon xp1900+ with a nice chunky Heatsink, and the cpu temp is climbing over the 60C mark unloaded. Never had this problem with the old Duron 800.
    Some guidance would be appreciated.
