This would actually have been better suited for the hardware forum, but since you need a video card for gaming I'll do my best to help you out.

First off, video cards for PCIe slots will fit in your board, so that part is easy. The question then becomes, what games do you want it to be able to handle? You mention Hell's Highway, but are there others you want to play as well? Your onboard video is good for being onboard, but at the same time there are a lot of dedicated cards that will be an improvement from what you have now. So do you want a short term fix, or are you looking to get a card that will get you set for a couple of years before you need to upgrade again?

Two more points to ponder

How much do you want to spend?

You may need a better power supply, can you find out the make/model# or specifications of the current PSU?

Good call, and my bad. Yeah, we definitely need to know your budget and PSU.

I also noticed that you're in India, and speaking as a European living in the the US now, it would help to know what your purchase options are. Is online better than local retail? Is local retail very focused on specific brands? That sort of thing.

yeah am in india. well ,my budget is 6000/- which is around 130 to 150 US dollars. and i plan to keep it for a long term as well..been able to play call of duty 2 and other games but right now am focused on hells highway and resident evil:5.. speaking of online and retail, i normally go to the retail stores and buy it. The power supply i have is 450 WATTS..opened the cabinet and checked it...The motherboard is ASUS M4N68T-M LE V2 AMD series..has ASUS Anti-Surge Protection which prevents expensive devices and the motherboard from damage caused by power surges from switching power supply(PSU)..so which external graphics card would you recommend for this motherboard? something that would work on most high end games..and hope i dont hav to change my motherboard..

Hmm, I think I would have to class that PSU as a 'no-name' and assume that the outputs stated maybe somewhat 'optimistic'. The latest 'real' data I've seen for PSU reliability is here but you can see that even with the best brands, sometimes they make a bad PSU

It might be worth risking your current PSU for a few months while you save for a replacement with 500+W, providing the new card isn't too power-hungry and the PSU has the correct connector to power it.

If you only use a single monitor around 1280x1024 or 1360x768 resolution, a good 512MB DDR5 graphics card around $110-130 US should be good for most current games; 1GB+ cards are most useful with very large resolutions and multi-monitor setups.

I'm sure Mimsy will offer further suggestions and specifics to help you choose

The PCU is definitely a concern... not only is the output low, especially if you want to add a video card, but PSU are not all the same, and not all created equal. Then again, as Satrow said, it may be worth risking it for a bit longer on a modest video card while saving up for a new PSU. I definitely suggest though that a new PSU is your next upgrade after a video card, and also that you avoid the non-name brands and go for a big established name. That will give you a reliable PSU and good value for your money.

Now for video cards...

Since you said you like ATI, here is a list of ATI-made cards from Newegg. I sorted them by rating, not price, but they can be found in the price range $100-$150 in most of the USA. Good brands are MSI, Sapphire, XFX, and ASUS, and a card in the HD 4000 series, or in the HD 5000 series will get you set with gaming for a couple of years.

Also, the cards on that list are all PCIe compatible, which means they'll work in your motherboard. Honestly, your motherboard is fine, I wouldn't worry about that. The PSU is more of a concern. Make sure you look at the PSU requirements for any card you are thinking of, before you buy it.

Hmm, I think the Radeon HD 5770 or GeForce GTS 250 (or GTS 450) would be about the highest cards you might afford, also probably the highest you'd be able to run on your current PSU (if it behaves); a safer bet, power consumption-wise would be the HD 5750. As to which brand to choose, it really depends on the exact models you look at, each brand might have a number of cards of that spec., each with their own 'unique' attributes.

Based solely on that earlier returns rate review, ASUS, PNY, Gigabyte and MSI look like the 'best' brands, at least for those cards sold between October 1st 2009 and April 1st 2010 for returns made before October 2010.

The GTS 250 was more reliable than the HD 5770 then (or returned less frequently).

Tom's has some reviews, concentrate on the power consumption differences if you want tom use your current PSU for a while before upgrading it.

EDIT: I was composing this while Mimsy was posting, so I hope there's no conflict, if there is, please go with her advice rather than mine I'm just an amateur.

Likewise. My job is to know DRAM and SSDs, not video cards... they are just one of the most important pieces of my main hobby.

I have a GTX 260 in my main desktop gaming system, and it's a fantastic card, but it does require a beast of a power supply. Before that I had a couple of 8800 GS cards in SLI, and in my current gaming laptop there is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730. And to give you a basis of comparison, Mass Effect and Dragon Age both look spectacular on the laptop.

The desktop HD5750 is a great card, and so is the 5770. It goes back to what I said earlier, that you can't really go wrong with an HD 5000 card. ATI seems to be making better drivers than nVidia these days.

A real 500 - 550W PSU from the likes of Antec etc., should see a good number of years of service. Find out what's available in your area and check for validated user comments on those models with a few bigger retail sites like newegg and ebuyer before committing your cash.

As long as you get a PCIe card, it will be compatible with your motherboard. The important thing for you to keep in mind is the video card's PSU requirements. For example, if the PSU requirements say "minimum 450W output" then you want to make sure that you get a PSU that is somewhat above that. Look for an established brand like Antec, Rosewill, Corsair, CoolerMaster...

Other than that, all that satrow just said.

Newegg's user reviews are a very good resource, they have a very knowledgeable customer base. And we will still be here as well, if you have more questions.
