The end of the world is nigh; 21 May, to be precise. That's the date when Harold Camping, a preacher from Oakland, California, is confidently predicting the Second Coming of the Lord. At about 6pm, he reckons 2 per cent of the world's population will be immediately "raptured" to Heaven; the rest of us will get sent straight to the Other Place.

If Mr Camping were speaking from any normal pulpit, it would be easy to dismiss him as just another religious eccentric wrongly calling the apocalypse. But thanks to this elderly man's ubiquity, on America's airwaves and billboards, his unlikely Doomsday message is almost impossible to ignore...

And the weather's just taken a cold turn so I can't even G&T my way to the apocalypse.

I was wrong in my previous posts.
Prediction was for 6pm in each time zone, not USA alone.

New Zealand would have been the first major country to come to an end.
2 hours later it would have been us Aussies turn.

By then the preacher should have realised that his prediction was wrong AGAIN.

Camping has not commented publically on the failed prediction.

Camping is far from the first doomsayer to falsely predict the end of the world. In fact, doomsday experts say that a belief in the end is comforting to some people who see the world as irredeemably evil.

Even centuries of failed predictions can't convince believers that the end is not near, according to Lorenzo DiTommaso, a religion professor at Concordia University in Montreal. Religious doom predictors see their sacred texts as infallible, DiTommaso said, so any failed predictions are mistakes of interpretation — and the next interpretation could always be right.

So gear up for 2012, everyone. We heard the Mayan calendar is ending, and it's sure to be a wild ride.
