Default US preacher warns end of the world is nigh

US preacher warns end of the world is nigh: 21 May, around 6pm, to be precise
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...e-2254139.html

Quote:
The end of the world is nigh; 21 May, to be precise. That's the date when Harold Camping, a preacher from Oakland, California, is confidently predicting the Second Coming of the Lord. At about 6pm, he reckons 2 per cent of the world's population will be immediately "raptured" to Heaven; the rest of us will get sent straight to the Other Place.

If Mr Camping were speaking from any normal pulpit, it would be easy to dismiss him as just another religious eccentric wrongly calling the apocalypse. But thanks to this elderly man's ubiquity, on America's airwaves and billboards, his unlikely Doomsday message is almost impossible to ignore...
Read the full article on the link above.

At least we Aussies will have another 14-16 (approx) hours of life due to time zone differences.

I reckon FredG will be well prepared.
What are you doing?

IIRC, my ex and I went down to a South Australian beach to witness "the end of the world" in 1976.

Rather than a list of things I want to do, I have a list of things I will NOT be doing because the world is ending!
  • laundry
  • dishes
  • housecleaning
  • paying bills

I was planning to mow the lawns tomorrow. But even if I leave it until Sunday, it's still Saturday in the preacher's part of the world.
And the weather's just taken a cold turn so I can't even G&T my way to the apocalypse.

EDIT - bigbazza, you would have shared that day with Don Dunstan, am I right?

You are probably correct.
I don't remember that bit.
It WAS a long time ago.

Hey, NOT paying bills.
I like that one.
It'll save some postage stamps.

Do I still have to take a shower?

What's the dress code?
Is it casual, or should I wear a coat and tie.

Every day Mr Camping, an 89-year-old former civil engineer, speaks to his followers via the Family Radio Network, a religious broadcasting organisation funded entirely by donations from listeners. Such is their generosity (assets total $120m) that his network now owns 66 stations in the US alone.
I never know how to feel about things like this,on one hand the people that donate deserve to have their money took from them,on the other I hate with a passion people who get rich through religion.

I'd laugh if he has a heart attack at 6.00pmLike Donni Darko or something...

I think most men are more afraid of their wives than of any prediction that the world will end. If the world is ending, you better believe that you should still take out the trash!!!

I was wrong in my previous posts.
Prediction was for 6pm in each time zone, not USA alone.

New Zealand would have been the first major country to come to an end.
2 hours later it would have been us Aussies turn.

By then the preacher should have realised that his prediction was wrong AGAIN.

Quote:
Camping has not commented publically on the failed prediction.

Camping is far from the first doomsayer to falsely predict the end of the world. In fact, doomsday experts say that a belief in the end is comforting to some people who see the world as irredeemably evil.

Even centuries of failed predictions can't convince believers that the end is not near, according to Lorenzo DiTommaso, a religion professor at Concordia University in Montreal. Religious doom predictors see their sacred texts as infallible, DiTommaso said, so any failed predictions are mistakes of interpretation and the next interpretation could always be right.

So gear up for 2012, everyone. We heard the Mayan calendar is ending, and it's sure to be a wild ride.

Mr Camping's argument has convinced Adam Larsen, 32, from Kansas. He is among scores of "ambassadors" who have quit their jobs to drive around America in Family Radio vehicles warning of the impending apocalypse. "My favourite pastime is raccoon hunting," Mr Larsen told CNN. "I've had to give that up. But this task is far more important."
Oh dear nothing has happened, what will the cream of society do now

Now we have to wait another 6 months for the end of the world.

From Way Off Base at MG's home page at http://www.majorgeeks.com, today.
Quote:
End of the world: 'Rapture': Believers perplexed after prediction fails. Duh, losing.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-13489641

Partial quote from the above link.
Quote:
The 89-year-old has used broadcasts on a Christian network and billboards to publicise his ideas as part of a campaign that went global.

He said biblical texts indicated that a giant earthquake on Saturday - which he said would begin at 1800 at various time zones around the world - would mark the start of the world's destruction, and that by 21 October all non-believers will be dead...
At least we have more time to get ready.

Quote:
Robert Fitzpatrick, a retired transportation agency worker in New York, said he had spent more than $140,000 (85,000) of his savings on advertisements in the run-up to 21 May to publicise the prediction.

After 1800 passed and nothing had happened, he said: "I do not understand why... I do not understand why nothing has happened."

"I can't tell you what I feel right now. Obviously, I haven't understood it correctly because we're still here."
Of course you don't understand

Quote:
"I had some scepticism but I was trying to push the scepticism away because I believe in God," said Keith Bauer, who travelled 3,000 miles (4,800km), from Maryland to California, where Mr Camping's Family Radio is based, for the Rapture.

"I was hoping for it because I think heaven would be a lot better than this Earth," said Mr Bauer, a tractor-trailer driver, who took the week off work for the voyage.
If heaven is gonna be full of these people the first time and earthquake hits and a crevice opens up I'm jumping in.

I'm not giving god chance to rapture me away.
