Default No audio device, this is day 2 of trying, I'm at a loss....

First off, I'm not a pro. So here's what I've done. This is an older office computer so I'm not sure if this comp had sound from the onboard before XP pro, but I've never heard anything since then, no tool bar icon either. I've updated chipset, downloaded and installed the audio driver update off of Intel. The driver update is supposed to work for XP, but at the end of install I get a 98/2k needs to be updated message. Anyways, no dice. The update off Intel gives me Soundmax which shows up in my sound devices as working and enabled. I did get a message twice about another device was controlling audio(prior to installing anything but the Soundmax). My last effort was that I did try a realtek driver that stopped installing at the blue screen of death. Audio is enabled in bios. I would really appreciate any ideas. I attached an Everest report also.

Thanks!

Hi sprgroove and welcome to MG's,
Do you have any yellow ! in your device manager ??, please take a look in Services ... Start> Control Panel> Admin Tools> Services.. scroll down to Windows Audio rightclick> properties.. see if the settings are the same as mine.....

the go to check that the Multimedia Class Scheduler is also set the same as mine.....

If those services are running normally try this driver here....

Thank you iain.t! I didn't have Windows Audio set to start automatic. I now have sound! While I'm at it, if I was going to upgrade the video card, any suggestions? I'm having the freeze frame issue, nothing plays smoothly. Thank you for your help!

Hi and thanks for the feedback, I am pleased that you have sound now .
As for the graphics card I am not very well versed in them as I am not a gamer I just stick to low end ones as I only use my machines for the web browsing and programs that are not resource hungry... though I have had a quick look around and came up with these ......

http://shop.amd.com/US/_layouts/shop...tegory=Graphic Card click on the "compare 5" button !!

I would personally go for either of the Sapphire cards as I always hear good comments about those cards.
Just one thing though when you are experiencing the freeze frame issue are you putting a large load on your system ?? have you tried rolling your cards drivers back to a more steady driver version... is your version 6.11 ??...here is that driver for your card.....

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...rer300-xp.aspx

one other thing to remember also is that you must not allow Windows to update any of your hardware you should always go to the manufactures website for all of the latest drivers or to the OEM's/ Motherboards website.

if you need any more advice on the video card I would suggest you post in the hardware forum here.... http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=22 .... or the games here.... http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=16 ....

Sorry that I could not be of any more help.
