1. start -> run services.msc
check if the "SL UI notification service" is started - if not start it.

2. start or restart "software licensing" also in services.

3. windows update and BITS also have to be started in services.

2nd thing to try if the above services all seem to be started:
1. Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories. Right Click the 'Command Prompt' item and click the 'Run As Administrator' option.
In the Command Prompt window, Paste the following command:

REGSVR32 %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\WUAUENG.DLL

Press ENTER.

You should see a popup that says the command succeeded.
Exit the command prompt and try Windows Update again.
