It's all my fault. They got me...

I opened an email about a FedEx package I was waiting for... I'm an idiot. Next thing I know all of my icons disappear and I'm scrambling to try and get malware up. I do get it to work by going through my Rar icon left on my startup menu. It runs and I actually got a log. Saved it to my USB and restarted my computer. Now the computer just loops trying to start. Nothing works. Safe mode, last know config.. Nothing. Defeated. Unless one of you guys are the master of all masters in reviving this computer. I'm hoping you are reading this...

(I am away on work. Yes it's my work computer so I'm screwed. I do have my Mac in my hotel room. I will upload the log from malware. This is the worst virus I have ever seen.)

If you cannot boot in any mode ( safe or normal mode ) and you cannot run any of the READ & RUN ME there is not much we can do for you except suggest what is in the below quote box
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

So my computer ended up turning back on. I used rkill to help be able to move around. My c drive is wiped clean, but it shows that there is files def still there. I'm so confused. My desktop is all gone as well. The one file I am praying is still there was on my desktop. I also found out that I have the pum.startmenu. virus by running malware. I just restarted it and now it is doing the same looping where it keeps restarting itself. Apparently this is another issue. I will try and post all logs that I have tonight.

Please download and save the below tool from Grinler @ bleepingcomputer to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Now run it. Now see if you can find the items that seemed to be missing?

Attached is my rkill log and 2 malware logs I did when I had my computer running. It won't run right now, hopefully I get it on today.

and Tim!!! It worked! I ran Rkill as soon as I got my computer on and then ran what you told me. I got my files back! I still feel like this beast is in my computer. What should I do now? I am going to try and leave my computer on as long as possible.

See it you can now run both ComboFix and MGtools.

Combo to your desktop and MGTools to your C: drive.

So it went into its "keep restarting" mode when ComboFix tried to restart. I figured out that if you let it set for a little while off.. it ends up coming back on. Anyway.. here are the logs attached.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\aepdy.sys
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\1kAlMiG2Kb7FzP
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\~1kAlMiG2Kb7FzP
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\~1kAlMiG2Kb7FzPr
    C:\WINDOWS\Eqijupewuk.dat
    C:\Documents and Settings\Joseph W. Gallo\Local Settings\temp\2147483647.dat

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Note: If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Tim,

I did exactly what you said but the blue screen for ComboFix just sat there for hours until I had to force my computer to power down. It is running obviously better since you have worked your magic. I will try your instructions again tonight. Thank you for everything so far.

Ok so I tried ComboFix once more and it did the same thing as I described below. I had to power down, but this time I ran MGTools. Attached is the log.

    6. Now click the [IMG] button
    7. Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    8. Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when The Avenger finishes running.
    9. Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    10. A log file from The Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will pop-up for you to view when you login after reboot.
    11. Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).Make sure that you watch for the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and click on the Accept button TWICE to accept ( yes twice ).

Your logs look good. What malware issues are you still having, if any?

First off.. as usual.. I can't thank you enough for helping. The only thing I was going to mention is that my computer just seems to keep freezing up every now and then and acts sort of sluggish. Especially when using Firefox, it will say not responding and freeze for a few seconds and then everything goes back to normal.

Is there any other test to run for this? Just curious.

    Thanks again!

Those are questions best asked in the software forum. However, you can try removing FF and reinstalling:

We are going to be uninstalling your old version of FireFox and installing the new version. So do the below to save bookmarks:

    • Run FireFox and click Bookmarks.
    • Then select Organize Bootmarks.
    • Then on the next window click File and then select Export. Save the bookmarks.html file to your Desktop for later use in importing.

Now download and save the installer for the current version of FireFox but DO NOT install it yet. Get it here: Mozilla FireFox

You will need to exit FireFox now and use Internet Explorer to continue with the below until we reinstall FireFox.

Start by uninstalling FireFox and then reboot. Do not skip the reboot.
After reboot, delete the below folders:

    C:\Documents and Settings\UserAccount\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

where UserAccount is the actual user account name being used.

Now reinstall FireFox from the file previously downloaded.
Import your bookmarks file. (similar process to exporting).

    Is FireFox working okay now?

Ok I did what you said.. feels good to clean out FireFox to be honest. I am pretty much back up to speed with it. Thanks for all of your help Tim! I haven't really dont any maintanence on this computer in a while so I am going maybe stop over at the software department and hopefully it is all running well.

    THANKS!!!

You are most welcome. Safe surfing.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0
