Google Redirect Infection

I was infected with a Google Redirect virus/trojan. I went through the complete series of fixes and have attached all logs except the tdsskiller log which I could not find.

I have also generated all the other log files ... combofix, MGtools. These are attached in this or the second post.

At this point the redirect problem seems to be fixed and my computer is seems OK. This was after a reboot and the completion of Google Redirect set of fixes.

    But ...

I get this error on booting (although combofix may have corrected it.):

Error loading c:/users/.../appdata/roaming/Msjint35J.dll. Not a valid Win32 application. That file is not found in the /roaming directory. But I can't say that it was ever there.

Also McAfee issued a "stopped" infected program from running message or something like that on the combofix reboot. Unfortunately I could not catch the name of the program and don't know where McAfee stores the log of this action.

Hoping I'm now clean but you guys are the experts on that.

    Hi, Interceptpoint! [IMG]

[IMG] From Programs and Features (via Control Panel), please uninstall the below:
    • Conduit Engine
    • CounterSpy
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 20

[IMG] Go back and complete step #6 of the READ and RUN ME FIRST

[IMG] Now we need to make use of ComboFix by sUBs
    • Make sure that ComboFix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your desktop but do not run it!
      • If it is not on your desktop, the below will not work.
    • Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into Notepad:
    Code:

    • Save the above as CFScript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you must exit all browsers now before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFScript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe.
    • This shall launch ComboFix.
Note: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
    • Allow ComboFix to update itself if prompted.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced at C:\ComboFix.txt
Note: If after running ComboFix you discover none of your programs will open up because you receive the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (How to attach items to your post)

[IMG] Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

[IMG] Now run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by double-clicking it (Vista and Win7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
Then attach C:\MGlogs.zip to your next message. (How to attach items to your post)
    Notes:
    • This will automatically update all the logs inside MGlogs.zip
    • Make sure you click Accept on the License Agreement from Trend Micro HiJackThis - v2.0.4 twice if prompted.

    I have it. ;)

LET ME KNOW HOW THE PC IS RUNNING AFTER YOU HAVE COMPLETED THESE STEPS

Computer is running MUCH better. Task Manager loads essentially instantly vs 30 to 60 seconds. Firefox loads in a few seconds vs. a minute or two. So things are looking up.

I followed all of your instructions. Attached are the two log files.

    You skipped this step!!
[IMG] Go back and complete step #6 of the READ and RUN ME FIRST

Do this and then attach the log from Defogger!

Read and follow these instructions: Use MSconfig to setup for Normal Startup Mode

Here is what I see as Step #6:

Step 6: Disable Any Disk Emulation Software (like Daemon Tools..etc)

    I did that.

And I don't see any reference to defogger anywhere. I think we have a disconnect.

    OK, my bad.

A couple a things are new:

    1. Error message on re-boot: "Open PCI table file (PCI.tab) error!!" This may be an Asus file but I'm just guessing.

    2. I got CPU overtemp warnings while running MGTools. Started with MGTools and ended when MGTools finished. That seems odd.

    Files are attached.

    Good job! [IMG]

[IMG] Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double-clicking it (Vista and Win7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
Shut down your protection software now to avoid possible conflicts.
Note: This is actually Trend Micro HiJackThis - v2.0.4
Choose Do a system scan only and select the following lines but do not click fix until you exit all explorer windows and all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
After clicking Fix, exit out of Trend Micro HiJackThis - v2.0.4

Please upload the following files to VirusTotal for analysis and let me know the results
    • C:\Users\Jeff\AppData\Roaming\system\kernel.exe
    • C:\windows\updaters.exe

  10. Interceptpoint

    Interceptpoint Private E-2

I ran analyse.exe but forgot to run as administrator.

    These 4 files were fixed:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [updaters.exe] C:\windows\updaters.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [HKCU] C:\Users\Jeff\AppData\Roaming\system\kernel.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [0x017] 0x017
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-419064612-1075002440-279287348-1015\..\Run:

    This file was not found:

[DAEMON Tools Lite] "C:\Program Files (x86)\DAEMON Tools Lite\daemon.exe" -autorun (User 'NeroMediaHomeUser.4')

I re-ran analyse.exe as administrator and still did not find it.

These files are not on my computer:

    C:\Users\Jeff\AppData\Roaming\system\kernel.exe
    C:\windows\updaters.exe

    Ok,

Please run ComboFix again (without any type of script)

Then rerun GetLogs.bat and attach the new MGlogs.zip

  12. Interceptpoint

    Interceptpoint Private E-2

    Here's MGlogs.zip.

Also FYI. Two new messages on reboot:

    1. AAcenter stopped working.

    2. Exception EOleSysError in module aasp.dll at 0000DCED.

    Attached Files:

I am not finding any more malware in your logs

aaCenter.exe as you mentioned earlier is indeed something by ASUS, the below line to be exact:
Exception EOleSysError in module aasp.dll at 0000DCED. appears to also be related to ASUS as well >> http://www.vistax64.com/vista-general/168877-eolesyserror-module-aasp-dll-0000da31.html
Probably related to this program you have installed: ASUSUpdate

I can give you a temporary fix so you will probably stop seeing that error message on startup, but it does seem to be a problem with the ASUS related programs installed.

[IMG] Copy the bold text below to Notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "All files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

It was successful, reboot and see if the boot time has decreased and if those error messages are not showing anymore.

The rest of these concerns (if they still aren't gone) should be addressed in our Software forum.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis if it present
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Much thanks. You guys are the greatest.

The regedit fixes were fine. Shut down and bootup are faster. I think I'm good to go.
