Hello, I posted a thread in the software section because I was unable to access my desktop in normal mode. Safe mode worked fine. I was advised to stop all non-Windows start up programs, which I did. I am now able to access my desktop. However, when I try to download anything, my screen dims as if the computer is "thinking" and then it lightens back up and nothing happens.

I can't access msconfig to start adding my programs back in. I can't add or remove programs. I am thinking I must have some kind of malware. I read the READ FIRST section, but it recommends backing up files first which I am unable to do. When I try to access the back up function, the control panel freezes.

I have been told to find a capable person to remove my hard drive and back up my files that way. My problem is that I don't have any capable friends and I don't have any money right now. I greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!

What startup processess and what services did you stop?

Why? What happens? And have you tried going back to safe mode to run MSconfig.

By backing up, we mean back up your important data to another harddisk or to DVD/CD so that it is saved someplace other than in this computer. Is that what you are trying to do?

And if you cannot download anything, you are not going to be able to run the READ & RUN ME FIRST anyway. Do you have another computer that you can use to download files? Are you posting your messages from the problem computer?

Currently I'm not thinking your problems are malware.

Hi and thank you for responding,

I disabled all start up processes and all non-Windows services. Do you want me to list them all?

When I try to access msconfig, the screen dims for about 90 seconds, then lights back up but nothing opens. Same thing when I try to download. I can access msconfig in safe mode and I am now able to add and remove programs in safe mode which I couldn't do before.

I am trying to back up to a disk, but I can't even get into the back up center in normal or safe mode. In normal mode, I am unable to get into anything in the control panel. Anything I can access quickly freezes. The internet is also stop and go.

I could get to another computer for downloading but there is not one in my home. And yes, I am posting from the problem computer. Thank you

Something else I didn't mention and I am not sure it matters - I can't get into Internet Explorer in normal or safe mode.
