My home computer shows the results of a google search, but when I click on a link, it takes me to a completely different web site. I've tried to follow the guidelines, and will attach the relevant log files.

You have an MBR infection. It would be best to first backup your data and personal files.

Now, if you don't have your install disc:
Download the appropriate file for your system:
    Win7 64bit Recovery Environment

    Win7 32bit Recovery Environment

You can use ImageBurn to create the disc.

Once you have created the disc, boot to the bios and change the boot order to CD/DVD as first boot device. Insert the disc and reboot.

Once in the Recovery Environment, type this:
    Bootrec.exe /fixmbr

Reboot to normal mode and re-run MBRCheck and attach the new log.

Also you need to attach the requested log from MGtools.

I created the Recovery CD, and I was able to run the command, which said it ran successfully, but when I log back in in normal mode, MBRCheck still reports that the MBR is faked. I've attached the most current MBRCheck Logs.

We are starting to notice that running the fixmbr command is not being effective. It may be a new form of MBR infection that we need to look into. Have patience.

Please download mbr.exe and save it to the root directory, usually C:\ <- (Important!).

    * Go to Start > Run and type: cmd.exe
    * press Ok.
    * At the command prompt type: c:\mbr.exe >>"C:\mbr.log"
    * press Enter.
    * The process is automatic...a black DOS window will open and quickly disappear. This is normal.
    * A log file named mbr.log will be created and saved to the root of the system drive (usually C:\).
    * Copy and paste the results of the mbr.log in your next reply.

If you have a problem using the command prompt, you can just double-click on mbr.exe to run the tool.

OK, I will post the log. It doesn't say much just:
Stealth MBR rootkit/Mebroot/Sinowal/TDL4 detector 0.4.2 by Gmer, http://www.gmer.net
    Windows 6.1.7601

    device: opened successfully
    user: error reading MBR
error: Read The handle is invalid.
    kernel: error reading MBR

A couple of other things I've noticed. When the computer first logs on, I very briefly see a command prompt come up with the title bar "ipconfig". I wonder if there's something I could do to rename ipconfig.

Also, I now have Malware Bytes and McAfee installed on this computer. When I'm in recovery mode, can I run these problems at all before logging back in in normal mode? I guess I will wait for your advice.

OK, I tried two things, both which seemed to be failures. I logged in in recovery mode, and ran the bootrec to attempt to fix the problem, followed by mbr to get the log, but was told that a required subsystem for that image wasn't available. I also tried renaming ipconfig, but that didn't seem to do anything, so I renamed it back.

That isn't showing any problems with your MBR. Please download the latest version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one. Run the exe and attach a new log.

I would also like you to bypass the router, assuming you have one and connect directly to your modem. Are you still being redirected?

  11. bcushman

    bcushman Private E-2

I'm attaching the logs from MGTools.

I'm not keen to eliminate the router. I have configured a MAC address on the router which is for an old computer that I no longer have. If I remove the router, the cable company won't support this computer for several hours, and none of the other computers in my house will be able to connect either. Given that only one computer is exhibiting this problem, it doesn't seem like the router is the source of the problems. If you really think I'm going to need to do this, I will need to find a time when the kids don't need access to the computer for a couple of hours so that I can get the cable company to recognize the new MAC address.

I'm also beginning to think it may be time to start from scratch. This computer is a Dell, and apparently there's a partition on the hard-drive that contains the original installation, so if I can just back up anything that didn't make it in the last backup (from about four months ago), that might be the fastest way to go.

If you are having other computers running through the router without incidence, then it is not the router.
We have been starting to see more and more threads where trying to fix the mbr is failing. If you want to backup your data and files, then you must not only reformat, but also repartition the drive to remove the faked mbr. Let me know what you want to do.

Crap. I'm not super familiar with hard-drive architecture. You're telling me that this Dell partition is also toast now that my MBR is corrupt? So I'm going to have to reload all the necessary device drivers, etc?

What are my options? Was there anything unusual in the MGTools zip file? I do remember that the first time I tried to download MGTools, I got a weird error, which made me think there was a chance that the virus was afraid of this tool, but I never saw that problem the second time I tried to download it.

Is it possible that after I run the bootrec /fixmbr that the MBR is temporarily healthy, but that some quick start application immediately corrupts it? Is there some way to test the MBR while still in recovery mode?

I've got a McAfee license. Do you think they would be interested in tracking this virus down further?

Let's try a few more things, because wiping the system would be a real PITA>

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

See the download links under this icon [IMG]
Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop.

    1. Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    2. Click OK at the warning to continue to use The Avenger
    3. Do not change any of the check box options!
    4. Shut down your protection software now to avoid possible conflicts.
    5. Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of The Avenger
    6. Now click the [IMG] button
    7. Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    8. Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when The Avenger finishes running.
    9. Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    10. A log file from The Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will pop-up for you to view when you login after reboot.
    11. Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

*** Please print these instructions ***

    1. Download Hiren's BootCD Iso to the desktop of a clean computer.
    2. Extract the zipped HirensBootCD.zip to your desktop.
    3. Open the extracted HirensBootCD folder and extract the zipped HirensBootCD.iso.
    4. Double click the BurnToCD.cmd bat file contained in the HirensBootCD folder. This will launch BurnCDCC.
    5. Insert a blank CD in your drive.
    6. Press Start. This will burn the image to disc. After it has completed...
    7. Restart your sick computer and boot from the HBCD you created.
o If your PC is not booting from the CD, you need to change the boot order:
    + Restart your PC
+ As soon as you get an image, press the Setup key. This is usually F2, F10, F12 or Del. On some machines the key can also be a different one. It should, however, be stated on the screen which key is the setup key.
+ Once you enter the computer's BIOS, use the arrow keys and tab key to move between elements. Press enter to select an item to change.
+ Navigate to the tab, where you can set the boot order. It should be called Boot or Boot order
+ The tab should now show your current boot order.
+ If the CD-drive is not at the top, please navigate to the CD-Rom drive with the keys arrows. Then move it to the top of the list. The keys for switching boot position are usually + to move up and - to move down. However they can be different, but they should be stated in the help, so that you can find them easily.
+ Once the CD-drive is on top of the boot order, navigate to Exit and select Exit saving changes.
o Your PC should now boot from your CD.
o Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
    8. When the CD boots choose "DOS BootCD".
At the Hiren's BootCD main menu, select Next and hit Enter.
At the second menu select 1 MBR (Master Boot Record)Tools
    [IMG]
In the list of MBR Tools select 1 MBR Work 1.08
    [IMG]
This screen will show the hard drive configuration.
Type 5 to Install standard MBR code then hit Enter
Type 1 to select Standard then hit Enter
Type Y then hit Enter to confirm
Type E then hit Enter to exit
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the machine

Now reboot and re-run MBRCheck and attach the new log.

Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).Make sure that you watch for the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and click on the Accept button TWICE to accept ( yes twice ).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

OK, so that caused some interesting things to happen. First off, I tried the Avenger script. I ran it, rebooted the computer, and when the computer came up, everything seemed to be working fine. Google searches were navigating to the correct place, and when I ran MBRCheck, it reported that my MBR was correct. I ran a McAfee Quick Scan, which reported nothing. However, when I rebooted, the virus was back. Now MBRCheck reported that my MBR was once again invalid. The one thing I couldn't do is that I no log file popped up after the roboot, and I couldn't find any c:\avenger.txt.

So next, I tried the Hiren Boot CD. It was a little tricky because your screen shots are from version 10.2, while the version I downloaded was version 15, and instead of saying "Dos BootCD", it said something like "Run DOS programs". The other weird thing is that when I tried unzipping the Hiren CD zip file, McAfee reported that there was a trojan in the zip file, which McAfee quanrantined. Nevertheless, I was able to follow the steps, and as I write this, things are once again running fine on my computer, and the MBR Check is reporting that everything is fine. However, I have not yet attempted to reboot. I'm going to try running a few full scans on the system. One other minor thing. In your instructions about Hiren CD, you recommended that I choose The MBR Code Base 1, which was "Standard", but if I look at the before and after images of MBR Check, I think I was supposed to choose 2, which is "Windows 7". It doesn't seem to have affected anything so far.

Is it possible that Avenger just missed a few temporary files? I noticed that there were a lot more folders in c:\users\cushman\AppData\Local than were listed in the script you sent me. Can you explain to me how to generate that script so that I can try to run it without giving the virus a chance to expand to other folders?

I then ran the MGLogs, and I've attached the log file.

So I rebooted a second time with the Hiren Boot CD still in, and google search worked fine. But when I rebooted the third time without the Hiren Boot CD, but just against my hard-drive, the problem returned. MBR Check once again reports that the MBR is faked.

I tried navigating to the blog.webroot.com, and running the "a tool was just released" link, but it didn't look promising. This was the message I got:

Warning! This is an unsupported Operation System.

This program will scan and remove any form of Popureb Trojan.

    And search still didn't work.

I think we have found the problem. You have a faked new partition that is causing the issues. Let me consult with the others and then see if we can't remove that partition and run a fixboot command. Hang in there.

In the meantime, Let's run Combo:
    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):

I ran the steps listed. When I first rebooted from the Windows CD, I got a message saying something like "The Recovery Disk has discovered problems with your boot drive, Would you like to repair them." I chose Yes (perhaps a mistake). Then I successfully ran the /fixmbr and the /fixboot.

But now when the computer reboots, I get a message saying "BOOTMGR is missing. Click Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." So I can't log in from the hard-drive at all. I will try googling this message, and could also try booting from the Hiren Boot CD, to see if I can get anywhere.

  26. bcushman

I was able to fix the BOOTMGR problem using the Windows Recovery CD.

I accidentally ran Combofix twice, the first time without the script, the second time with the script. I've attached both logs, with the one labeled ComboFix_First, and the second one just ComboFix.

MBR Check runs clean. Disk Manager doesn't show an additional partition. So far, google is working, but I haven't rebooted since doing these procedures. I will do a few more tests and post the results. Fingers are crossed.

Sounds like the issue is resolved. Let me know if you have any more problems.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
