    Hello everyone

    OS is XP Pro sp3
    Antivirus: Avira premium suite

It all started when my brother's computer yesterday was unable to update avira and then the logging on style has changed: everytime he boots there is a window asking for password and username.
Also when I tried ctrl + alt + del a window appeared displaying option of shutting down and restarting. He never changed those settings. At the same time Avira was unable to update persistently.

When i opened the pc today , Avira showed a file with suspicious activity it was called D41.exe. it was in program files\LP and looked strange.

I shut it down from Windows task manager because Avira was giving lots of alarms about it. I tried to erase it but many other weird named files appeared in task manager and the LP folder created man other files that came out of no where.

I manually updated Avira and tried to scan but blue screen of death occured.

When I rebooted Windows refused to open twice but I finally managed to.

I googled combofix because I had used it before. Now I know you guys have a do not use it first policy but I was hard pressed to: my brother did not want to lose his data and usually it takes a while to be answered. I had an account in another site and they answered me after 5 days. So I apologize for using combofix and if anything happens all the responsibility falls on my shoulders.
Anyway i am gonna attach the combofix report zipped.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Yes there are definitely signs of ZeroAccess in that log.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Thanks guys for answering me on such a short notice, unfortunately my brother was in a rush to use his computer since the virus destroyed all means of connecting the internet although I cancelled proxy changes. I could not even create a new connection. It seemed hopeless

I was wondering now what antivirus you would recommend to keep that virus out so It wont happen again.

Thanks for your valuable time again

    You're welcome.
So what did you do to fix it.

See this >> How to Protect yourself from malware!

However as noted in the above, there are no guarantees, especially against these newer types infections which will bypass basically any protection software. The new waves of TDL type infections are MBR and partition level infectors and nothing protects against the way these work.

So as mentioned in the above link, the most important part of protection, is the end user(s) of the PC. Users need to learn to be more careful where they are surfing and what they are downloading and installing.

First of all I could not fix the internet problem so I had to format it.
Second, now my pc has been infected and things went haywire. I struggled for 15 minutes to move combofix to desktop and activate it. The log will be attached.
Despite being thorughly formatted, my brother's pc is still in danger because we were using flashdisks to copy folders (big mistake, I know).

Should I start another thread for my brother's PC? I know this thread should belong to his pc but my problem is more urgent than his: Zero access is still dormant there.

We fix internet problems from ZeroAccess all the time without having to format. Some are easy and some are more difficult.

This current thread is for your brother's PC. If you want to work on your PC too then start a new thread for it. But for both PCs, you need to do ALL of the below:
