I purchased a USB TO SERIAL device that I needed to connect my external 54k Modem.
Worked wonderfully for 3 weeks & then for some reason the PC recognised the same device as a Microsoft ballpoint (whatever that is). Have un-installed the driver & re-plugged but the same issue. Has anyone any ideas? Thanks in advance. Don ![]() |

Here is quite a long thread regarding the issue. Do you have Windows 7. It seems to think the device is a Microsoft Serial Ballpoint mouse and then adds the drivers. See if removing disabling the Serial Ballpoint in Device Manager helps. If not try uninstalling it.

If possible uninstall the driver for your device. Download USBdview and run in an admin account. Delete all vendor specific devices including anything related to Microsoft. Reinstall your driver for the USB to serial device . Power down the computer. Attach your device and then reboot.

Regards Don ![]() this post was on answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum Per all of you who are having trouble with this in XP, open up the boot.ini in c:\ and add /NoSerialMouse right after (no space) the /fastdetect command. This should do it. It is a huge nuisance but solvable. I cannot find the boot.ini file anywhere? regards Don |

Be very careful editing the boot.ini file. You can do it by the following method.
In an admin account Start>Run>Msconfig Click the Boot.ini tab and make your edits. http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/bootini.htm |
