Default Norton Error 3048, 3 symptom of other issues

Norton Error 3048, 3 recently popped up on my computer and won't go away. I ran Norton Power Eraser per their instructions, and it only detected MGTools.exe as bad.

I went through XP Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure and the programs came up with some issues. I attached the logs, except that TDSSkiller didn't detect any threats and didn't produce a log.

Please look at the logs and let me know what I need to do. Thanks!

You can have Hitman delete what it finds.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Quote:
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{9BB47C17-9C68-4BB3-B188-DD9AF0FD2406}]
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Are you having issues with Windows Updates?

1. I ran Hitman, activated the one time, 30 day license and had Hitman delete what it found (log attached). Do you know how Adware.MyWebSearch might have got into my computer? (My kids play a lot of online games and used to install things, which I remove for the most part when I find it.)

2. I copied the text

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{9BB47C17-9C68-4BB3-B188-DD9AF0FD2406}]

to notepad. Saved it as fixME.reg to my desktop via the "Save as" type set to "all files" Once I saved it, I double clicked it and allow it to merge with the registry. I then received the message:

"The keys and values contained in C:\...\fixMe.reg have been successfully added to the registry."

3. I'm not aware of any issues with Windows Updates. Is there something specific I can check? I just ran Windows check for update and it came back with Microsoft Silverlight and Bing Desktop suggestions (which I did not install). My windows update history doesn't show any problem. On 9/12/2012, Windows update installed four important updates - Security update for MS Office 2007 suites, Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64, update rollup for ActiveX Killbits, and KB2735855. On 09/22/2012, Windows update installed the important security update KB2744842.

4. Not sure this matters, but I often run MS Delete Browser History, CCleaner without Wipe Free Space, Wise PC Engineer, Wise Disk Cleaner, Advanced SystemCare, Glary Utilities, usually just before I shut down each time. I also run CCleaner with Wipe Free Space every now and then and run CCleaner on start up. I try to erase all cookies at least once a day. Is there something else I can add to my, uh, procedure to keep things like Adware.MyWebSearch out of my reg.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
  1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
  2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
    • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
    • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
      • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
      • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
  3. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
  4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
  5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
  6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
  7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
  8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
  9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
  10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
