Red face Stop me from making an IE problem worse!

I am a nongeek in need of Major Geek Help!

It all startrd yesterday when my IE would not open. I would receive the message:
"IE has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I contacted Dell support and we uninstalled & reinstalled IE. It did not help.

I have a home network, so I downloaded the latest IE 6.0 from MS on a different pc and shipped it to the troubled machine. After install, I had the same problem.

I then shipped Netscape over to the troubled machine and loaded. I got it to work but did not set it as my default browser.

Through NS, I purchased, dnld, and instlld Nortan Internet Security2004 Professional. I also downloaded Earthlink's TotalAccess 2004.

Norton found a Trojan Horse in a file madise.dll and recommended I quarantine it.

It did not solve the problem.

I decided to remove TA2004 and when I rebooted, I get the following message after getting into my user account:

"TaskPanl.exe - Unable to locate component......The application has failed to start because E60Cmmon.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem".

After clicking OK, OK, I then get:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library....Run Time Error!..... Program:C:\Windows\surfmonkey\smproxy.exe............
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information".

Clicking the OK button will not make the message go away.

Now, I can no longer access the internet with NS or send and receive e-mail through OE.

I need help! Suggestions?

I installed Hijack which produced the following results:

Red face Are we getting there?

General_Lee_Stoned,

Thanks for your help!

After downloading and running the three files you linked me to, I continue to get the messages:

"TaskPanl.exe - Unable to locate component......The application has failed to start because E60Cmmon.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem".

And

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library....Run Time Error!..... Program:C:\Windows\surfmonkey\smproxy.exe............
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information".

I cannot access the internet and my OE will not send/receive. The taskbar that normally cycles through my email accounts never appears.

Below is the updated Hijack report. I am thinking I should check & Fix the items in BOLD

Thoughts?

Default A couple of things happened

General_Lee_Stoned

I no longer get the error messages immediately after restart and login.

I also do not get a "not responding error" in IE.

However, when I try to open OE or IE, I get:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library....Run Time Error!..... Program:C:\Windows\surfmonkey\smproxy.exe............
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information".

No access to the web or emails either.

The blue "loading" bar in the lower right of IE gets about 1/3 of the way before it stalls. When I click Stop & Refresh, an Action Cancelled message says that it was unable to llink to my web page (yahoo.com).

Also in my Windows Task Manager Applications box, MS Visual C++ Runtime Library is running.

Here is the latest Hijack:

you can also goto the start menu, to the run prompt and type "msconfig"

This will give you a listing of things that are starting up. Disable the smproxy entry. Sounds as if that was something installed by spyware or earthlink. Either way, it's trying to start up but looks to be uninstalled.

Default No Luck

Fw190,

Thanks for your suggestion.

I disabled all Startop Items and rebooted. I got similar results to my last post.

I think something is happening in windows\surfmonkey. I tried deleting that file last night but could not.

I am also unable to remove Earthlink TotalAccess 2004 and Earthlink Parental Controls in the Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs box.

Can I delete these folders directly in \Programs\?

Thumbs up 2004 - The year of the surfMONKEY!

General_Lee_Stoned,

Thank you sooooo much!

I was able to delete the surfmonkey folder.

After restart, I was able to access the web through IE and dnld new emails in OE.

I continued on with your initial recommendations and scanned for viruses using your weblinks.
trojanscan.com did not find anything
trendmicro.com found 2 viruses:
JAVA_BYTEVER.A
TROJ_WINSHOW.A

I deleted the viruses and reran hijack (see below)

I let NAV expire this summer and it cost me. This could have been alot worse.

Thanks again for your help!

Now that you have downloaded and cleaned
and removed....you need to download this:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4001

this will get rid of useless remnants that you now have
in your registry
