    Hiya,

I am having some major trouble identifying the problems on my pc :cry I have recently replaced my hard drive after getting a "replace this drive recover any data" message, I have also bought second hand a graphics card which was from a friends system and is working well, I have also upgraded my ram adding in 4gb of ddr2 along with the 2 x 1 gb strips giving me 6gb ram (it is the same clock speed and the ram was recommended by the crucial download).

    What is happening:

The pc starts up fine and on the whole runs OK, (windows 7 and the on-line poker sites I use) my problems are when I run the pc for too long or try to use the inbuilt "Rating" built into windows 7 the pc just switches off, its as if there is an overload or something somewhere.

Today I have started from scratch and stripped it down to the case, cleaned and dusted everything checked all the connectors I have even reset the processor and re-applied thermal paste I have made a fresh install of windows 7 and ran all updates but the problem still exists, I really don't know what to do next so I am turning to you guys to hopefully offer me a route back into pc heaven as it really is where I belong. :-D

I am asking for the steps I need to take to sort this out please?

Test the power supply. It is large enough for the additional hardware? How old is it?

My power supply is an enermax 500w

The HDD may be overheating. I had the same problem. Turned out the fan facing the HDD was not working. Replaced it and worked fine.

    Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions, I have 2 hard drives (one is a new install) I have ran numerous tests on them both using Sisoft Sandra benchmark software, one of them showed a fault so was removed, the power supply is as I said an enermax 500w it again is reasonably new.

I need to try to find software that will record my system and its internal parts as I run through the tests as I know now how to make it fail.

    Any ideas ?

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, chillipops.

If you're convinced that the PSU is good then here are a few things you might try:

    1. Enter your machine's BIOS setup and make sure that safe defaults are loaded - no 'turbo' settings. Make sure that any CPU temperature safeties are not set abnormally low, and check any temperature readings to make sure they look good. You might even consider loading a 3rd-party monitoring program (HWMonitor is a good freebie).

    2. Visually inspect the motherboard for any obvious burn/scorch marks, bulging capacitors, etc. - a leaking cap can cause intermittent shutdowns.

    3. Strip down to the bare essentials: unplug any peripheral components (especially USB). You might even run the motherboard for a while with just the processor and RAM onboard (no drives or other components) to see if you can produce a change in symptoms.

    4. You mentioned adding RAM and a video card - try reverting to the old card or onboard video and swapping/reducing memory modules, once again to see if you can produce a change in symptoms.

I agree with the others: a bad power supply does often present with indications such as yours. You might consider picking up another supply to test - they're not abnormally expensive, and since you don't seem to mind working on the hardware side of a computer you might find that having a spare PSU sometimes proves invaluable.

What type of graphics card do you have?

500W might be straddling the bare minimum power requirements.

Is there a way to find out if I am below the needed wattage ?

I have stripped down and rebuilt, the HD is fine now and the ram has passed all tests, I cant tell if the graphics card is faulty but I have had them go down before and it just doesn't look like that as they normally fail under heavy loads and tbh it is looking more and more likely to be the PSU, I have only had it a few months but I have just upgraded the Ram and graphics (both power hungry), I don't know if there is a way of testing it so I am looking for resolution and a replacement so if anyone knows how to find out if it is the problem please speak up I am looking now.

Thankyou for the advice guys I really appreciate anything offered.

    Thanks again,

    Chillipops.

    Chillipops.

    Hi again,

I am still getting the problem of my pc just shutting down and as it does it more I am noticing different outcomes to different things it really has me stumped !

    1. When I turn the pc on in a morning it will load through the usual bios and starting windows upon which it will shut off. It does this twice and then will start and run as well as it has. (All day and all night as long as I keep my workload on processing even by not running too many applications at the same time.)

    2. If I try to run the windows 7 rating system it will just shut off totally and I will have to run windows recovery 3/4 times each time the pc will not start, then on the 4th or 5th attempt it will run through the recovery and return to usual.

    3. I am an online poker player, in this i make video's of some of the games I play to replay at a later date either for review or for coaching, the video software is quite taxing and when I use it I have had to try not to use anything else on my system, when I have made the videos when they are being processed after editing my system has to run through a series of processes to make the video ready for viewing ( this takes a lot of processor activity. I have also had hard drives fail through heat because of the intensity of multi tasking when this is in operation) When my drive has failed I have to re-install a new version of windows 7 as the filing system is normally fried after it fails in the video processing.

Any Ideas guys PLEASE? I have a 500w power supply and I think it should be enough, I cant afford a power tester
