Avoid HP update sp23989.exe !!!

Due to the problem described at http://majorgeeks.com/vb/showthread.php?t=28296 , I downloaded and installed the BIOS update from http://www.hp.com/support for the Pavillion 504n.

Instead of restarting after the install, the computer shut down.

When I attempted to restart it, the unit shut down after six seconds. It continues to do this consistently.

I called HP support and they are going to send me a box to place the CPU in and send it to them for repair.

I would recommend that anyone wishing to install this update have HP tech service on the line when they do. The tech I spoke to did not have any answers for me but said they would likely not pull the upgrade off the site.

So, be warned.

 

Well, I can say that HP does, indeed, have good service. They sent a box to place the unit in that was prepaid and I sent it back to them Fed-Ex. The turn-around was about five days.

It turned out that the BIOS was corrupted by the update. Don't know why, though. I think I am going to suggest to them that they post the CRC value for the downloads and a CRC checker to determine if the file that is downloaded is valid.

So, I'm back.
