I've tried Adaware and Spybot, but can't seem to get rid of whatever trojan is lurking. Adaware says it can't remove a few items listed as:

    c:\windows\system32\inetadpt.dll and c:\windows\system32\alaamon.dll

    My hijackthis logfile reads:

    Check this link out: http://www.computercops.biz/print-1-40186.html

it should help with at least part of your problem. If still having a problem afterwards, repost another HiJaak This log. But before running HiJaak This, shut everything you can down, especially all Win explorer and Internet Explorer windows. Makes logs a little easier to read.

There are a couple of other items too that need fixing:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50032

It may be worth giving CWShredder a run too: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html

I ran shredder and reran adaware and spybot, but I still have something there. I'm not good at understanding the Hijackthis list. I appreciate the help (and really want it) but please be very specific so I can understand :) thanks!

Okay I understand now! Let's try the following first.
    First Step: Download, LSPFix

    1.Unzip and run LSPFix.
    2.Check 'I know what I'm doing'.
3.Select inetadpt.dll (and if alaamon.dll is there select it too).
4.Click the right-pointing 'arrows' and move all instances of inetadpt.dll and nothing else to the remove (RHS) side
5.Click the 'Finished' button. (if you exit with the X at top right nothing happens)

Second Step: Boot in Safe Mode (don't connect to the internet)
See this link and select the one for your OS which is Windows XP:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

Third step: Run Ad-aware with the following settings:
Make the following changes to the settings in Ad-aware.
-Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
    - Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:
Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
    Press "Scan Now"
    - Check option "Use Custom scanning options"
    - Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"
    - Press "Select drives\folders to scan"
    - Select the active partition which is usually C:
Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...
Allow the program to fix what it finds.

Forth Step: Scan with Spybot and allow the program to fix what it finds.

Fifth Step: Run HiJaak This again while in safe mode:
With the HiJaak This Log in front of you put check marks on the following lines and then select fix:
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50032
    O16 - DPF: {DDFFA75A-E81D-4454-89FC-B9FD0631E726} - http://www.bundleware.com/activeX/DS3/DS3.cab

    Sixth Step:
Open windows explorer and navigate to you c:\windows\system32 directory. You may have to click Tools, Folder Options, then the View Tab and make sure Advance settings are set as follows:
for Hidden files and folders select Show hidden files and folders
for Hide extensions for known file types, make sure it is unchecked then click apply.
Now look for those two dll files and if either is still there, delete it
    c:\windows\system32\inetadpt.dll
    c:\windows\system32\alaamon.dll

    Seventh Step: Reboot Normally
See how things are working now. You can run Ad-aware again and see if it complains about those DLL's.

Thanks for the help, but I'm still stuck! I downloaded LSPFix and looked for inetadpt.dll, but it wasn't there. alaamon.dll wasn't either.

I also ran both Adaware and Spysweeper in Safe Mode and after booting up. the alaamon.dll was still there.

    On the hijack this log, I did find R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = and
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
and checked off both. The last ones I could not find.

I also tried to open exlorer and navigate to windows/system 32 directory. Went to Tools, but there was no folder option ???

I've never been so frustrated! Any other ideas???

Ok! Shut down everything you can especially Windows & Internet explorer sessions and then run another HiJaak This log and post it so I can see where you are at.

I don't understand your statement, "Went to Tools, but there was no folder option ???"
This has to be there. Open Windows Explore and from the top menu select Tools. The bottom selection should be "Folder Options...". If you select that and then the View Tab and now make sure Advance settings are set as follows:
    - for Hidden files and folders select Show hidden files and folders
    - for Hide extensions for known file types, make sure it is unchecked then click apply.

Now look for those two dll files and if either is still there, delete it
    c:\windows\system32\inetadpt.dll
    c:\windows\system32\alaamon.dll

If you cannot find them that way then use Start, Search, All files and folders and enter inetadpt.dll in the All or part of the file name box. Click search. If it finds the file, right click on it and select Delete. Repeat with alaamon.dll. Afterwards empty your recycle bin. If you do find these files but cannot get them to delete boot in safe mode as I told you in an earlier message and use the steps above again to try to delete them.

  8. skraun

Here's the latest hijack this log. I did go into the sytem 32 directory, but could not find inetadpt.dll or alaamon.dll. I've continued to run Ad-aware and Spysweeper in both safe and regular modes, but the pop ups continue, and something keeps trying to change my home page. Fortuanetly spysweeker prevents that.

Any ideas on what it is I have and how to get rid of it??

Look for something like the below line with Task Manager

    C:\PROGRA~1\LITEBO~1\manager bend tray.exe

if you find it kill it. Then goto that directory and delete it. If you do not find it in Task Manager, find that directory and delete it.

Also remove the next line with HiJaak This:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KeepProxy] C:\PROGRA~1\LITEBO~1\manager bend tray.exe

Use HiJaak This again and if either of the two lines below exist, fix them. They seem to be changing each time you run HiJaak This to a different name.

Sorry for the long wait. I was away from my computer this week. I did all that you told me - as best as I was able and it is still there. Here's my current hijack this log. I did run adaware again, and it could delete all but aumparse.dll. I found it in the system 32 directory, but I'm not able to delete it. ??? I am completely stumped.
