hi guys, umm.. im not sure if this thread is in the right place and if it isnt sorry, its my first thread
. I just have a few questions about the cmd command ipconfig. When i type ipconfig /all into DOS i get a bunch load of funky stuff. However mostly i notice were it says IP routing enabled . . . . . . : NO WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : NO I was wondering what these both mean and how could i make that no a yes. I was also wondering the relevance of the lease obtained and expired variable and what they mean. I have a Dl link 604+ router with an ISDN line and a wired connection. When i go to edit the "DHCP Configuration on LAN" options i notice there is a box were i can type in a leased time what does this mean? and does it have any relation with the ipconfig lease obtained and expired variable? Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : andrew Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : ADMtek AN983 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Adapter #2 Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0A-CD-06-F9-75 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 193.188.97.212 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Sunday, June 27, 2004 3:32:02 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Tuesday, July 27, 2004 3:32:02 PM btw how do u insert an image into a thread without having to specify a url. is it not possible to upload the image?

just because it says NO doesn't mean it HAS to be changed to a "YES". You need neither to be enabled.
WINS is Windows Internet Naming Service.. a lost protocol that was supposed to be like DNS. Forget about it. Pretend they don't exist.

To my understanding when using DHCP you lease an ip until the lease expires. I know at work when someone does over a gigs worth of traffic and they normally don't it sets a flag and we delete their mac address from DHCP until they can explian why they were sending receiving so many packets. Once their lease expires they aren't getting back on the net until we talk with them....
