Default The Official Folding@Home thread

Sorry Robster... I just thought we needed a single thread to congregate in with all the info for a new folder such as myself!

Right.

Shamelessly stolen from http://folding.stanford.edu/

Firstly, What is Folding?

Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease.

What is Folding@Home, then?
Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease.

Ok, enough of the facts!

If you want to get involved, then you need to at least download the client.
http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html

Myself, I've gone with the console client, because it uses less resources to show you the pretty stuff and more to do the crunching! Plus, I can run it as a service if I want to (more on that in a minute)

Majorgeeks.com is a team on the Folding@Home website, and you can see our stats here:
http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/...e&teamnum=12072

If you do get the console version, then you might want to see whats going on. A great program to do this with is Electron Microscope III (or EMIII), which you can download here:
http://home.comcast.net/~wxdude1/emsite/download.html
EMIII will let you monitor the client on your local machine, and also over a network (by sharing the F@H directory, and setting up a "box" to monitor that directory in the configuration), so for example, my setup monitors my PC and also my server which is crunching too.

I spect I'll work on a MG skin if enough people use it

Soon to folow, a quick tutorial on how to set up FAH4Console as a service

How to run F@H as a service!

Okay campers, for all you windows freekz who want to have FAH run silently, and quickly, and require no attention whatsoever, I have a solution for you!

1. The easy way
Use FireDaemon to create a service. Nice and friendly, but not very geeky. FireDaemon

2. The harder way!
Ever heard of sc.exe? Probably not. A very useful little tool for creating, deleting and configuring services from the command line. Have a look at this MSKB
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=251192

See if you can get it running with that. The command is :
sc create FAH binpath= "c:\path\To\FAH4Console.exe -service" start= boot

Hmm. This folding thing is making my Processor run at 64c (147F).. That seems really hot. Is it?

It worked fine, except it made everything else slower as well.

If you're running hot, I suggest throttling the CPU usage by FAH... which is easy to do. Just open the client.CFG file, find "cpuusage=100" and change it to "cpuusage=90". Save and restart the client. That should keep your temps nominal

What fish said :D
Also in addition to what was above. If your running the pretty version just right click and pick configure. That puts you where you can turn down the CPU percentage.

Woke up this morning and all four computers were ready to send a unit, kool.
