Default Installing HijackThis - a zip vs exe

I know just enough about my laptop to ruin it - so can anyone answer this naive question..... When I have downloaded other programs (ie CWShredder etc.. it downloaded with an .exe icon for installation - but the HijackTHis is only a .zip file - which my system won't open - why? What program that I have will open a .zip file?

My system is a Windows ME, running office small bus.

Thanks, SLCardinal

SLCardinal,

If you have WinZip, you can open .zip files. If you don't have it you can download it from Major Geeks. These folks that know how this stuff works would give you a link in their message, but I can tell you to go to the MG home page, look under Files on the left hand side, click on Miscellaneous, and when that page comes up, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on WinZip. That will take you to the download page that will give you the details.

Good Luck!

Please read this sticky thread < READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal >

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99

Also, make sure when you run Hijack this that you do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

For .zip files you are looking for WinZip 9.0 SR-1

If you have any further questions just let me know, Thanks!
