    What’s our team number?
    12072.

What should I put my username as?
It doesn’t really matter, as long as it stays the same you should be fine. For the sake of continuity its best to use the same name as you registered as on the forum (you did register on the forum, right?).

    What’s the point of Folding?
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=48015

    Why do WE fold?
Major Geeks folds because we think that our userbase has the potential to contribute significantly to this project, and that we should put our beautifully tweaked geekin' machines to good use when we're not around ;)
For more info Folding@Geeks NEEDS YOU!!

    What if my PC crashes?
You will lose the last frame you were working on, but chances are you will not lose the entire WU.

When will my WU be finished?
If you have the graphical client, you will have an estimation of when the WU will be finished according to current data in the status screen (click the flower/cog icon in the system tray), under WU End.

If you have the console client, you won’t get an estimation of when the WU ends, just the deadline and notification of when each frame is completed (checkpoints).

    What’s a deadline?
The deadline is the point after which a WU earns no more points.

Why do some WUs take longer than others?
    http://folding.stanford.edu/faq.html#run.unit

It can also depend on the Core being used.

There are three types of cores currently in use by the F@H project : Gromacs, Amber and Tinker.

The Gromac core is a highly optimised computing core which comes from the contribution of Gromac and Stanford. The WU's which use the Gromac core typically have 100 frames, and they complete quite quickly. The Gromac core is optimised for modern processors, and will give you the best speed and points. In short : to get points fast, you WANT these WU's

The Tinker core was made specifically for Folding@Home... and was the original core. The WU's consist of 100 to 400 frames, and typically take a few days to complete. The Tinker core is in the process of being optimised, but most new computations are done with the faster Gromacs core. But certain calculations cannot be done with the Gromacs core, and so the Tinker core is continuing to be used.

In order to get mostly Gromacs WU's, you should pass the -advmethods parameter to the console client.

UPDATE: You can also edit your client.cfg file to allow for large work packets (> 5MB) by adding "bigpackets=yes" before [http], provided you have client version 5 or above.

    What client should I get?
    Whatever suits your needs best.

Can I install FAH as service?
Yep. Get the console version, you should have the option to install as a service when you first run the program :)

    Should I Overclock?
In most cases: NO. If you can guarantee 100% stability, then it might be a good idea. You can check the stability of your machine by using a program like Prime95, if you can run it for at least 24 Hours with no errors, then you are more or less stable.

The reason for this is: if the results for the work unit you are computing has calculation errors in it (as a result of overclocking) it is essentially useless, and as such will not gain any points.

I have a problem running Folding@Home client? What should I do?
Check the FAQs on the Stanford website, and if you still have a problem then hit the pandegroup forums.

Can you run dual instances on a HT processor (such as a P4 HT)
Yes, you can. However, we have found this to be somewhat ineffective. If you really want to know how to run this, then there are plenty of links on google.

I'll leave this open for the time being, for suggestions to be added.

Can I install F@H at work?
By all means. However, it is very much recommended us that you SEEK PERMISSION FIRST before you go ahead.

You should not install F@H on any company machine without appropriate approval from proper company officials. Each company have their own policies and some view distributed computing clients as theft of service.

Do you need a broadband (high speed) connection to run F@H? Do I need to be permenantly connected?
Nope. You do require an internet connection to download new work, which will happen automatically whenever F@H detects a connection is present. As long as you connect to the internet reasonabley frequently, new work should be downloaded just fine. A high speed connection certainly helps speed the download process, but again it is not nececary, and work downloads are fully resumable.

stats, where and how to find them?
WHY do we fold and why someone should join in folding?
what happens if my computer crashes?
if i can't find an answer here is there another place i can go and get help? (the folding forum)
(actualy this is my own real question) i read about overclocking and making more points. what is it and should i try it?

goldfish.. these are just suggestions. feel free to delete this post and add the ones you would like to your FAQ.

Problem... my Waiting for Core doesn't update the steps... I have to click on another window then click it back into focus for it to go up a single step. Is there a problem with it?

Does any more folding get done by a team than by an individual?

  9. lbmest

    lbmest MajorGeek

The team's score is the aggregate score of the individual members.
    No "team" folding per se.

I wonder if it is possible to transfer the small amount of work units I completed under an incorect team number???

    Or are they gone forever.....

For Number two you can run it all the time and just shut it down if your running really heavy apps, it automatically reduces its self as your other programs reguire CPU time.

Happy Folding and Welcome to Folding, your "Spare" CPU time could save a life.

Is 1 frame per 1m. 13s good? I should have my first WU after about two weeks. I have 5000 frams to complete. How much faster is the text version?

Hey blatherbeard(love the alias:-D) and welcome to the fold!:wave Ya, it doesn't cost anything if you install the generic CPU folder and you don't leave your machine on 24/7. After that, if you have the resources and the want, you can fold like a maniac like some of us do.:innocent :)
