well I have what I hope turns out to be a silly question. I have a Compaq 2100 laptop that has a 1.6 mhz celeron. I also have a mobile p4 2.4ghz processor. Can I put the p4 in this machine without reloading windows?

I know as soon as you change the motherboard you have to reinstall windows or repair them. I would think the processor would be the same. Don't know i changed motherboard and processor in the same time and I had to do it. Just put in the windows dics and repair it which will allow you to basically run 2 partitions unless you 'missplaced' your disk :p and since there is a very little chancve of overpassing the xp pro later build.
    Good luck anyway.

I would firstly check what mobo and bios version you are running. It may well be that your mobo does not support p4. If it does you would need to ascertain that the current bios version is ok. If not check whether a bios update will allow you to use your intended cpu.

These points should be top of your check list. As regards whether you need to re-install windows the short answer is no. Some people clear their cmos prior to cpu upgrades, I generally just drop it in and have never had issues.

From an o/s point of view win98se will just detect the new cpu. XP could be problematic as it may (may not) require reactivation.

    Good luck

Does anyone know where i could go to find out if this mobo will support a 2.4 ghz cpu? I know that when this model was available you could custom configure it up to 2.5 ghz. Plus I just had the mobo replaced,(other one just died) so maybe the bios will be newer also. I tried to ask HP about upgrading and that was nothing more than 30 mins of my life wasted!

Someone in another thread recommended this utility which is freeware

    >>Go get a copy of ''Everst Home Edition'' its a freebee and when run it will give info on your chipset..http://www.lavalys.com/<<

Looks like its the home edition which is the free one. If you had your mobo replaced recently that should be ok but best to check first and also need to get the bios version that the board is running. Looks like this prog will do this otherwise at post it will flash up.

    Good luck
