Hi Buying new hardrive which is best?

I have a 40G now and it is almost full. I want to buy another for backup, but I do not know which is fastest or really good quality. I do 3d Animation so I need something that can handle the strain quickly with plenty of room. Maybe I should buy an 80G and use my current one for backup? What do you all think? I would like to be in the $50 price range.

 

Western digital is good.
50$ u.s im guessing.
You can probably buy 80 Gig for that much. Really depends what you do with your computer. Games, mp's, dvd's, games etc.
You know how they say Size does matter.

someone told me to figure out the correct style of drive that you need first..ide or whatever else there is..im no expert on hard drives..i just replaced my old failing hard drive with a maxtor with 8mb buffer and it loads programs fast..i think it was around $70..i think maxtor has the best hard drive available at the moment...not sure how much that one costs...

 

how much of a difference does the buffer make? is 8 much better then 2mb?

 

8 MB are the performance drives out now .. and most large HDDs these days have that much ... soon there will be 16MB+ if you wish to hold out ...

but more importantly are you sure your computer is SATA compatible? posting your mobo or PC make/model would help

 

Check again on Western Digital

I'm in school for computer engineering and in one of my classes we did a test on hard drives. Unfortunately the Western Digital came in dead last. The highest rating was a Seagate hard drive along with Samsung next, then Maxtor. The major downfalls the class found in the Western Digital were overheating, buildup of errors and skip readings over a short period, and also weight. Weight was a factor because it was the lightest out of the 5 tested Hard Drives and usually a hard drive that is heavier is known to be constructed with better quality parts. For those of you that didn't know, i urge you to go to a computer store and hold a Western Digital hard drive and then hold another hard drive (like Maxtor). The lightness of the Western is kind of scary actually...lol.

So i usually DON'T recommend them. Since the major computer stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc) carry Western Digital as a main stock source (or at least they did about a year ago), people get the misconception that they are good because they see them around all the time. I've unfortunately had a problem with one a while back where my stock Western Digital in my Hewlitt Packard took a dump only after a year's use. Anywho, i replaced it with a Seagate and it has run like butter ever since!

I also recommend shopping for parts on www.newegg.com...i believe someone mentioned it earlier. The prices are hard to beat and their shipping and customer service is outstanding. I've built 10 PC's so far using all parts ordered from newegg.com and have had no problems.....well, i was shipped the wrong part one time, but i think that was my fault because i ordered it wrong. But after i shipped the part back i received the right one 2 days later (2-day shipping) at no cost!

I'm no BIG computer tech, so these are just some of my opinions and i'm just sharing what i have learned about hard drives in the past so if anyone wants to disagree with me, then feel free and go right ahead! LOL

P.S. I've noticed computer forums are much like automotive forums, EVERYONE has a different opinion on a subject....even on a simple subject as "how many tires on a car?" ..lol, crazy huh?!?!?

Thanks so much ! I would like to invest in a 16mb in the future with 100 or 200g. No, I do not think my computer is sata compatible. I am trying to decide between Maxtor and Wd, Same specs roughly same price. I have heard many good things about Maxtor but I haven't seen many of the seagates.

I agree Newegg is the best. I bought an external 250G last year that helps, but it is not very trustworthy because alot of files get courrpted for no reason.

Also a friend of mine mentioned that since I have huge file sizes and hours and days of rendering that I should get hyperthreading. What do you think?

 

Hyperthreading isn't a hard drive function. It is processor related and only available on the newer Pentium 4 chips. It isn't something that you can get, in the way of downloading and installing, but must be supported by the motherboard, BIOS, and processor.

As for hard drive manufacturers, I favor Maxtor and Western Digital. Both have done very well for me, and the only hard drive that I have had actually die on me was a Seagate. I'm sure that others have had different experiences, but you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

 

I usually buy Maxtor hard drives to put in my computers....good reliable stability for a low price! I would go with one of those!
