What's the difference between a 4-port router and a 4-port hub? Don't they do essentially the same thing?

I may be wrong, but I believe a router has a modem and a hub does not. Routers are used more for DSL/broadband/cable internet connections.

For your purposes, the biggest differences you will see:

Router: Less collisions, network adddress translation, DHCP, built in firewall, more security (usually).

Hub: Dumb device. "repeats" what goes through it. Higher collision rate, no security at all, does not have DHCP to assign IP addresses. No built in firewall. Serves only as a connectivity device between networked computers. Not ideal for internet access at all.
