boot failure

    Please help...my computer will not boot even in safe mode. I can get windows to load sometimes but as soon as I touch any key or move the mouse the computer goes in a power save mode and shuts down. This is a friends computer so I don't know if this is a user value or what. Even when I tried to reload windows and did a CD boot the computer went to the power save mode I mentioned above when it tried to load windows. Virus...bad hard drive??? Any ideas.

    I have seen this on some computers going into sleep mode after a power surge. But, if it is trying to boot, my first suspicion would be a hard drive, one of the most common failures on any PC.

    I replaced the hard drive and still have the same problem. Could it be the power supply or the motherboard.??

    have you reset cmos?
    overclocking anything?

    I have not reset anything. This is a friends computer and I do not believe it is overclocked. How can I check

    1: ask him
    2: check bios if frontside bus speeds are set properly
