Problems with clients not able to access internet

Hey guys, I have a SBS 2003 server and 4x XP Pro SP2 clients. In the server, I have 2 NICS - one connected to an ADSL router (only), and one to a Dell 2608 switch, onward to 4x clients.

My server can access the web, and all my clients can access my server, shared resources no problem, but my clients cannot access the net. They can ping the external nic (192.168.0.2) but not the netgear router (192.168.0.1).

Has anyone got any ideas please (I've spent 2 days trying to fix this - I'm hoping you can make me feel inadequate by fixing it in 2 minutes!)

    All the best Chris

Probably a dhcp issue be sure if u use the server to push down dhcp settings that the dhcp portion of your router is turned off. Can u access the set up page of the router 192.168.1.1?

I can access the router (192.168.0.1) from the server, but nowhere else - I can't even ping it from the clients. I can ping the external nic in the server (192.168.0.2)

The router is handling DHCP for the 192.168.0.0 (mask 255.255.255.0) range, the server for 192.168.16.0 (mask 255.255.255.0) range.

Everything on the 192.168.16.x subnet is using the server's internal nic 192.168.16.2 as the gateway & DNS server. (except the nic itself obviously).

Thanks for replying Andrew - any help would be appreciated. All the best, chris

you need to set up a proxy on that server so clients can get to the internet. http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm

Why not just put a switch between the router and all 5 pcs make 1 network, instead of 2?
Unless you are doing some filtering / management the way it is now.

Your server is not in the same subnet as your router and probably not your other PC's. If I read your addressing right.

    Router 192.168.0.1
    Server 192.168.16.2

    is that correct??

If so you are on two different subnets for a 24 bit mask.
    example:
    192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0 = 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254

    try this:
    Router IP = 192.168.0.1
    Server IP = 192.168.0.2

Clients with get information via DHCP.

    try this.

2 Nics my friend - one the 192.168.16.2 is internal nic, secondary nic that connects to router is 192.168.0.2 already.

I decided to ignore Microsoft and disable my external nic, putting everything thru my internal switch. Works fine now. Thanks for your help

Make sure your Default gateway is the routers IP. If you can't ping the defaukt gateway, you will go nowhere. ooops! my bad, I see you corrected the problem...
