Okay my laptop wasn't booting took the hard drive out, It's a IBM travelstar, something was jingling around inside so I opened it up and this little arm with a small box on the end fell out, so that must be the problem cause everything else is tight in place. So where does this little arm go.

Yeah, you might as well throw the hard drive away now. However, if the arm was loose, there was probably nothing you could have done anyway. You'll need to buy another laptop hard drive.

I second that shocked look!!

I would be looking for a new HD about now.. once opened you might as well throw it away, to open a drive it would need to be done in a clean room ( industrial clean dust free ) as your drive platters will have dust all over them, dust if you did get this HD back together and working will cause the drive to crash as the heads work with just a few microns of air between them and the platter so any dust will cause the heads to jump/crash into the platter casuing a HD failure, the arm is most likely one of the read heads so thats possibly scratched the platter surface.

but I did open it in a clean room no dust and have keep it covered and if it doesn't work I would at least like to put it together for learning purposes.

Even if you did manage to get the arm back on, the exposure of the hard drive to dust and the sheer difficulty of getting the arm in exactly the right place would make the task impossible and pointless.

No, by clean room, we mean, an industrially clean room. Like absolutely no dust particles in the air and you have to wear hair nets and special suits to go in.

There is ZERO % chance of the drive working again.

Why do I not believe this statment!! as both Wyatt and myself posted the room would have to be clinically clean as in cpu fabrication plants clean, where the air is filtered and as stated the workers wear special suits.

Even if you do get this back together, your data is gone unless you now use a commercial recover company and even then their is no guarantee that the data is recoverable as by now their is dust and sticky/greasy fingerprints on the platters.

not many guides to putting a HD backtogether out on the WWW but this one will give you an idea of what the inside parts and where they should be http://halogen.note.amherst.edu/~wing/wingie/tech/hdchime/hdchime.php then if all fails its a nifty windchime.

Actually there IS one thing that you can do with the drive now that's its been opened, the take out the voice coil magnets...rare earth magnets, very cool.

Or just set the drive on your desk with out the lid, cool techie decoration.

I comprehend more than you think! The subject of CPU fabrication clean rooms was already approached and a little more on topic to PCs BUT Hey maybe taking the HD platters to a Car Paint clean room they maybe able to buff out any scratches and dust and get the HD going again  ;)

What I most enjoying of this thread is not just the fact that he opened the HDD initially or the mere fact that he is now trying to put it back together... but the fact that he wants it back together so that he can play his games.

Funny... and I am not trying to be mean when I say that some people just should not be allowed to use hand tools much less be allowed around computers.
