    Hi
I am on dial up. My PC is slowing and I have cleaned up as best I can. Explorer keeps crashing and things are so slow I nearly fall asleep waiting for pages to open!!
I am not an IT expert so I am looking for a program that will remove rubbish and give my PC a kick start and keep it on top form.
Can anyone suggest something that is also not going to cost the earth please...am trying to survive on a senior citizen pension!!Cheers and thanks to you all. :)

If you're tired of explorer crashing, there's always Mozilla Firefox. 1.0.5 is going to come out within the next couple of days, so I'd wait until then before getting it since you're on dial-up (although it shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to download).

    Try these 2.

    Cleanup! http://www.stevengould.org/
    EmpTemp http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1575

as well as CrapCleaner aka CCleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4191

All 3 are free, each finds stuff the other 2 miss. Run them after every Internet session. They don't conflict with each other.

Try google seraches on "speed up dialup", or similar for much info.

Use a downloader program. I recommend

    Leechget http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1821

Download DrTcp from www.dslreports.com/drtcp It is a small download as is the easiest way to alter modem settings. Make sure you write down each, and every, setting when you start experimenting, ESPECIALLY your starting settings, so you can at least get back to those that you STARTED with.

If you can get hold of the UK mag, PC Utlities, edition 55 and pages 54/55, you will find Q & A on "Optimising the Internet". A UK member of MG might be able to photocopy the article for you, if they have the mag, and post it to you. Halo, Goldy, or someone, please step in.

Getting the best out of dialup depends on many trial and error attempts. All of which involve rebooting, thus losing your dialup connection, and costing another phone call.:p I think Primus/AOL is strangling my attempts at speed, as no matter what settings I try, it makes no difference, using their "one Australia wide phone number" solution. :p  I've gotta get broadband. ;) Bazza

Firefox may be great, but fixing the IE issue should be the norm here. I really do hate when ppl say, IE has problems? Try firefox instead.

Note: I've been using variants of phoenix far longer than most people.

Thanks for all your info and help.
No emot for a XXXXKiss XXXX or a
((((((((((hug)))))))))) I guess Geeks don't go in fer that sort of stuff!!! :p
Hal ( PC) is now 100% better and I have no longer have the urge to throw him outta the window.
After Crap cleaner...I downloaded speedupmyPC and that put the icing on the cake.
I don't feel confident enuff to start tweaking too much....I rely on Hal for earning a small pittance and he can get upset when I fiddle ..... maybe later after I absorb some of the more technical stuff I may pluck up courage :)
My dial costs only £12 per month and I get unlimited web time....so I guess I can live happily with Hal for a while longer.
    Thanks a lot everyone...
