Will my AGP graphics card fit in a PCI-E motherboard

    Hello,

Yesterday I finally killed my three year-old Duron 1200 machine -- power failure. I'm actually pretty impressed considering it only cost $220 new.

So now I'm looking for a new, cheaper machine. I'm spending a little more this time for a P4 3.0, 1G RAM, etc. My concern is that I recently spent $150 on an 8X AGP graphics card (OK, I'll admit it, it's an ATI all-in-wonder 9600 -- but I happen to like it!). The motherboard in the new computer is an Asus P5GD1-VM, which has the PCI-E graphics interface. Does anyone have any idea whether my AGP card will also work in this?

    Thanks,
    Jon

No, if you look you will see the slots are different. Try selling it and put the bucks towards a PCI-E card.

    No, but there are "converters".

They hurt performance of the agp card though.

I agree with jerkyking its a much better idea to just purchase a pci ie video card as convertors are not a very good solution.

Asrock (Asus' budget line brand) is selling an Athlon 64 mobo that supports both PCI Express and AGP video cards (even simultaneously). It is HOT and often Out of Stock as it only costs around $70. Based on the new and great ULi (formerly ALi, Acer Labs Inc.) chipset - there should be a LOT more mobos based on this chipset soon (I know of at least two more almost ready) as it allows current owners of high-end AGP cards to get their use out of them. AFAIK there isn't much to be gained by going PCI-E for video yet...
. Check out reviews of the Asrock ULi card at http://www.anandtech.com and http://www.ocworkbench.com (probably more by now, but I'm not aware of any).

    .bh.,

    Here, have a :beer; !

The nice thing about converters is you can take your time in upgrading the video card, as that is usually the most expensive part in a computer, depending on specs of course.
