errors with modem?

    I'm not sure where or who to ask this question but I have been having trouble with my modem. When I get on line after about 10 - 15 min I start getting errors on the recieved side and the websites start to error out on me. Can someone help me figure this out, I'm not sure if it's my modem or the server I'm using.

    Plug a regular telephone into the jack you normally use for your modem - the more basic the phone the better (i.e. not cordless, no special amplification for the hearing impaired, etc. Pick up that phone and just listen to the dial tone for as long as you can - do you hear any crackling static?
    If no, after listening to the dial tone as long as possible (until the off-hook error tone starts up), hang up. After a few seconds pick the phone back up and after a few seconds of listening to the dail tone (any static?) press any number EXCEPT 0 (Zero). The dial tone should go away - listen again for static for as long as you can. Any static? If no, I have no further ideas right now.
    . How loud are the unamplified voices of your callers in reference to other phones you use? How far away from you is the PoP ( the town the phone number you dial is located in ) for your ISP. If you have to up the volume on your phone to hear your callers well and/or the PoP is a fair ways away, you might need to turn up the sensitivity of your modem. The command can be found in the "AT Command Reference" for your modem (may be a PDF file on the CD that came with it). When you find the command, you insert a trial value into the "Additonal Commands" field within your modem's Advanced Properties (put a ; between each command in the Additonal Commands field).
    . You may also want to try extending the Carrier Dropout tolerance of your modem. This command is fairly standard (something like S9= or S10=) it will also be described in your AT Command Reference.
    . If you can't locate your AT Command Reference, post the make and model number of your modem and I'll see what I can dig up.

    I changed volum setting but the extending the Carrier Dropout tolerance of your modem setting I tried and the modem wouldn't work I coppied the codes maybe it will help, I did change the cord to go directly to the phone line and the line is staticey but we rent here so not much I can do about that. I will let you know if the one change helped out

    CD Carrier Detect ON if modem receives a valid data signal (carrier) from a remote modem, indicating that data transmission is possible. Always ON if CD override is ON (&C0).
    RD Received Data Flashes when modem sends result codes or passes received data bits from remote.

    Typing Commands

    * Type commands in either upper or lower case, not a combination. Use the Backspace key to delete errors. (You cannot delete the original AT command.)
    * If a command has numeric options and you don't include a number, zero is assumed. For example, if you type ATB, the command ATB0 is assumed.
    * Every command except A/, +++, and A> must begin with the AT prefix and be entered by pressing ENTER.

    All defaults are based on the &F1*Hardware Flow Control template loaded in NVRAM when the modem is shipped. Defaults are listed in italics.
    Basic Data Commands
    <control key>S Stop or restart help screens.
    <control key>C or <control key>K Stop help screens.
    $ Use in conjunction with D, S, or & commands (or just AT) to display a basic command list; online help.
    A Manual Answer: Goes offhook in answer mode. Pressing any key before connected aborts the operations.
    A/ Re-executes the last issued command. Used mainly to redial. Does not require the AT prefix or a Carriage Return.
    A> Re-executes the last issued command continuously until the user intervenes or the command is executed forever. Does not require the AT prefix or a Carriage Return.

    Register Default Function

    S2 43 Stores ASCII decimal code for the escape code character. Default character is +. A value of 128 - 255 disables escape code.

    S22 17 Stores ASCII decimal code for the XON character.
    S23 19 Stores ASCII decimal code for the XOFF character.

    S25 5 Sets duration, in hundredths of a second, of a true DTR drop. Prevents modem from interpreting random glitches as DTR loss. (Most users will use the default; this register is useful for compatibility with older systems and operating software.)

    Your landlord should fix the internal phone wiring if it has notable static. If you are paying the phone bill directly and you are paying for internal wiring maintenance (usually a separate line-item on your bill) then you can call the phone company and they will take care of the inside wiring too. If you do not have a separate line-item on your bill for internal wiring maintenance, then the landlord is responsible for the wiring from the panel on the outside wall up to your phone jack.
    . And you can call your local phone company (the one you are buying service from, of course) to check and see if the static is from outside the building (up to the phone connections panel on the outside wall). Quite often it is one of the drops from the telephone pole to the outside box - a rule of thumb is if the static gets MUCH worse in cold weather, then it's almost always in your drop.
    . But unless you get rid of the static, you will never have reliable connections. Take my word for it...
