external hard drive

    Were can I find some information on the ins and outs of using an external hard drive for backup files. I have a Maxtor Personal Storage 3100. I am confused because I was told to back up on the drive and then disconnect it. I cannot do this because I receive the message that the device'generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later. How would I go about using this drive correctly? No instructions except installations came with the drive. Please advise.
