Default Software quality

Hey all,

Im writing an essay on professional issues in IT, can anybody bring to mind a release of software that was rushed out to beat competitors to the market and hence of poor quality ie full of bugs, doesn't do what it is suposed to do.

Or anything that could cause potential delay in releasing a large IT system?

I consider this to be part of my research

I like the attatched image Snakefoot, thanks for the links. The baggage system, Top 10 reasons for project failure and project success and failure are very helpful indeed.

@ Adrynalyne
Can you give any specific games? Im sure a game could be considered as an IT system.

Thanks again for the link Snakefoot, your a life saver! (note to self: give yourself more than one night to write a 2,000 word essay)

This is the last question, I promise.

Can anyone think of specific examples where software quality was comprimised in order to meet a deadline?

Please help, tomorrow morning is fast approaching!

Not sure if its in the same vein, but Mac OS X 10.0 was released in a damn near beta form to (I think) compete with Windows XP.

Of course, now that I mentioned that, I cannot find any articles that I read previously about it.

There is a saying that one can only get 2 of the following 3 goals:

1. Good quality
2. Fast development
3. Cheap costs

All software projects is a compromise between these 3 goals, and the quality is seldom left untouched, unless writting software to run a nuclear reactor.

Forexample Windows 2000 was released with 63,000 known bugs

I agree with Snakefoot about Windows 2000.

For me, it wouldn't even work out of the box, without some beta files I found on the net.

Personally i find that windows 2000 is very stable as i use it myself and have not had a major problem with it yet. Although it is up to date from windows update so the problems may be fixed. Also for another crappy program would be verizon yahoo!'s parental control system. I found more registry errors in that thing then i do when i clone my machine for backup and clean like 400 registry errors out of ms office. It has broken lsp chains, and anything touched in its registry causes a need to reinstall the entire program. Hope that helps

If Windows 2000 has so many bugs, I wonder how many Windows ME has?

I can almost understand and expect programs to have bugs, but I get annoyed when they don't release a patch to address it.

For example, and it's another game, Project IGI had problems where there were no crosshairs, and they never bothered to release a patch.

Dont even go there with winme! I had a computer on it at one point and all we got were bsod's...lots of em. Once it had xp loaded they stopped. That was worse with winme. 2k is alot more stable.
