Not noticed but I may have turned of notifications, if it didnt install the latest is here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4648 ( 12-01-05 or in the uk 01-12-05 depends which way around your date format is I guess, but Dec - 01 -05 )

so if the download update didnt work try that one above? ( posible firewall and or popup blocker stopped it... guesstimating here )

Desktop is fine,

but I personally tend to create a folder specifically for downloads, once you choose that location ( by browsing to it, the 1st time ) the OS will remember it next time and all your downloads will end up in one folder, saves trying to work out where they went.

Updating Java using their updater can be a bit of a pain. Whenever an update is released, I just download the full installer from MajorGeeks:

http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4648

Install that, and then uninstall the/any previous version (which would be Update 5 and below in this case). I then configure Java how I want to (turn off the automatic check for updates etc). Seems to works fine for me.

I would replace as matter of course for one major reason, security... updates are released in part to add further security as well as bug fixes to software, so yes un-install 5 and install 6.

Yes. You can then install the Update 6 version (see Majorgeeks link in previous post) if you so wish.
