Disappointing crib hand

Yeah, there's just no pleasing me. Us and another couple were playing crib last night, and I was dealt three fives and a king. You can imagine my disappointment when the other five was cut ;) . Twenty eight points. Now I probably need to explain. I've played crib for close to 40 years, and this is the first time I've been dealt three fives with a ten or face card, and had the five cut. To get the highest hand possible you have to be dealt three fives and a jack of the same suit as the other five. Then the other five has to be cut, giving you twenty nine points. Achieving this score is comparable to a hole in one in golf and warrants your name in the paper, and more importantly, bragging rights. No one cares about twenty eight. Well except my partner. The twenty eight did vault us into the lead and eventually the win. Anyway, my point, how long before the three fives come up again, but this time with the correct jack, and the cut five again?

Haven't played crib(bage) for many years now, but I seem to remember that we were dealt 5 cards, (not 4 only), with one turned up. Maybe an Aussie variation to the rules.

3 x 7's, pair of eights, and a nine turned up was a good hand. Obviously 10's and 5's was another. Bazza

Neither have I but I sure found it handy in remembering it was 15-2 chest compressions to breaths in a recent 1st aid exam

well, to get the full 29 points has a probability of 0.000000094 or 1 in 10,638,297.
(Assuming there are 4 people playing, you were dealt to first, 52 card deck and only the one jack was dealt)

Just incase anyone is interested :)

That also assumes that people aren't cheating.

I know I used to cheat in strip poker so I could lose. :)

The way we play (and the only way I've ever seen it played, actually, including online with folks from various countries) you are dealt six cards, and you each put two cards into the dealer's crib leaving you with four in your hand, plus the one turned up after your cards are in the crib.

Correct for two players. Four players are dealt five cards, each tossing one to the crib. We've since developed six handed crib. Five cards each, everyone throws one away, and four of the throwaways becomes the crib.
