It seems like everything is just disappearing for some reason... Wordpad is gone now aswell.

RU sure Wordpad has disappeared or might it be that the shortcut has been deleted. Do a seach for wordpad.exe - if it is still there all you need do is to re-create a shortcut to it.

It has disappeared... All my wordpad documents have changed into that white box with a picture of a window in the middle, meaning there's nothing it can associate itself with.

    Wordpad has definetly gone.

You say everything is dissapearing, besides wordpad what else is gone.

Presumably as SnakeFoot has suggested there are no other users of the system than yourself. Did you do a search for wordpad.exe as I suggested - because if the program is still there all that has happened, for whatever reason, is that your wordpad files have lost association with the wordpad program.
If using Xp click on Start- Search - For files/folders and type in wordpad.exe in the menu which opens up. If the file is there then wordpad is alive and well - all you need do is a reassociate!
To do this open up Explorer, navigate to a wordpad file hold down the shift key and right click on the file and you will see a menu with a list of options. Click on Open With - wait a second and a menu will open with lots of the programs on your computer. Run down the list until you find Wordpad. If it is not there then go down to the Browse button at the bottom and navigate to the Wordpad.exe file which you previously searched for. Click then click on Open then 'always open this file with this program' and that's it!
In my limited experience it is not unusual for files to lose their parent program.
If any of the above does not work for you, then its time to look for nasties like malware virus etc.
    Cheers

Well I just searched for wordpad and it's come up but I'm not sure if this is the correct one as it's in a location I've never seen before... This is also the same location 'paint' is in and when I double clicked on paint it opened up to a completely different layout than what I'm used to so I'm not sure if this is the actual Wordpad & Paint:

If its in dllcache, then running sfc /scannow will replace it in the correct location.

How do I do that mate? I've no idea sorry. Will this also fix Paint aswell, and hopefully calculator as I'm having the same problem with them.

You sure you didn't remove these items from add/remove Windows components?

If they are in the dllcache, and not removed from add/remove windows components, yes.

You run sfc by opening cmd.exe and typing

    sfc /scannow

I've just got a message asking me to insert my Windows XP cd. Well I can't as this computer came preloaded with Windows XP and never had a cd with it. What should I do? I 'MAY' have got rid of some stuff from windows components in add/remove as I got rid of outlook express just the other day from there, and that's when everything started going wrong. But there's nothing there to do with wordpad, paint etc so I can't see why that'd be the problem.

Heh, both calculator and paint are added via add/remove windows components. If you select accessories and utilities, and press details, then select accessories and press details, you can check that the boxes for them are checked. If not, check them and press ok.

As for wordpad, i would try sfc as Adrynalyne suggested. Your system should have come with some CDs... most vendors include recovery disks, at least.

I just tried to add calculator etc back via add/remove windows components but it requires that I insert the Windows XP cd. I didn't get ANY cd's with this apart from Microsoft Works Suite 2004. Where do I turn now?

I would call the manufacturer, and see if you can get discs for your product key...hopefully you'll have the windows sticker on the machine... if not, I would take the machine to where you bought it with some serious questions about the legitimacy of the operating system.

Is there absolutely nothing I can do then apart from that?
